Decreasing education standards, increasing disillusionment with voting means many Congress members don't win races where more than 20% of the voting population actually bothers to vote. There are many reasons for this, but the fact is that to classify the United States as it currently is, as a Republic, can only be done by taking liberties with the current definition of a Republic.
