Basically, the protest was a photo op, and to try and inflate their appearance they opted for a long and rather narrow march in the dark with a tapering end in the distance. The torches were to give you a sense that there were more people at the back then there actually were.
It's an old trick, and kind of sad when you compare it to something like those campus candlelight vigil photos, which do a much better job of giving a false sense of enormous numbers.
