Imagine a worker pulling a lever in a factory. He's operating some mostly-automated device.
Now imagine a loser pulling a lever in a casino. He's operating some mostly-automated device.
The first guy is turning raw materials into product that sells at a profit. He is adding value to the world. He gets paid for this, but if his job really comes down to babying a lever on this machine, he'd probably get paid more if he had the skill to work elsewhere in the factory.
The second guy is turning time into lost money. He is transferring his income to people more intelligent to himself, and therefore adding value to the world. He loses money for this, because it's irrational behavior wtf stop pulling that lever.
Either way, a transaction is occurring that surely wouldn't occur without the intervention of capital. Don't get hung up on thinking of capital as a fiscal instrument - central banking has proven that fiscal instruments can be destructive of capital indeed! Rather, capitalism is about using the means of production (YOUR CAPITAL) to create more means of production, thereby enriching yourself and the world.
