As far as I've read, 7.62 absolutely destroys tissue and bone, and generally incapacitates in one shot... it may be decent for home defense.

There is no appreciable different in "killing power" between 9mm and .40, infact .40 is so close in power that .40 offers nothing 9mm doesnt already offers and comes with the cost of less magazine capacity. If you dont want to kill anyone, dont get a gun.

Go with an HK. I have had my USP compact for 7 years now as a carry. I've put over 10K rounds through it and it still fires the same as it did when I first bought it. So either a P2000 or USPc would be my recommendation.

HK's are NOT expensive. They USED to be with their old price model, and infact some of their older models (p2000 being one) are still priced high. Whereas their newer models such as the VP9 and VP9sk are priced a couple dollars more than a glock. Perfectly affordable for a superiorly manufactured product, though it always depends on the shooters skill.
the only american handguns i'd buy are revolvers like the s&w 686 or ruger gp100, i'm not a fan of the old mans favorite- the 1911.

9mm. make sure the gun handles +p (plus pressure) loads and get good defensive ammo such as speer gold dots, federal hst, or winchester ranger/winchester pdx. I've shot thousands of +p and +p+ loads out of my p2000sk without a hiccup, it'll handle it fine.

5.56 is cheap, 7.62 has more power but kicks like a mule, .300 is a middle ground. AR-15's are simple, common and work well if you treat it right. Mosin's can go for $100. Shotgun's can go for $200, get a Remington or a mossberg if you're a lefty. .45 acp is good for concealef carry, but get 5.7 if you want armour penetration. Avoid .22lr and 9mm, they're cheap as hell, but only good for varmints. Or you could go with a garand through the cmp.

/k/ here. I own several firearms and can tell you with confidence that most of the posters here are bullshitting you. First of all you should have posted this thread on /k/. Sup Forums is full of Cowa Doody kids with no gun experience. The single, best handgun you can possibly own is a Colt .45 ACP M1911. It's good for concealed carry (observing State laws of course), it has a good stopping power, and the icing on the cake is: it's very patriotic. I do not recommend 9mm or 10mm for self defense. 9mm is too small and won't stop a determined robber to take your belongings and your life. 10mm has the same problem, but because it's too fast, not because it's too small. Revolvers are not ideal for someone who has never shot a gun. For home defense, you'll want a shotgun. A short barrelled R870 any cartridge works best, again, the icing on the cake is it's the most patriotic shotgun you can have. But read your State's Castle law before you decide you're going to take some nigger's life. However, keep in mind that the most important thing of all, and pay attention to this, this is really important, is that the gun you're using makes very little difference in the moment of truth... What is important is training. Train a lot, there are plenty of training courses everywhere in America. You'll know how to act calmly and efficiently when the time comes. If you don't, when the time comes, you'll sperg out, fuck up and possibly die as well. Look for self defense courses, take part in some of them.

I daily carry a .45 USPc, but I'm not going to sit here and circle jerk about how much more powerful a .45 is because te ammo has 35% more grain...... Logically speaking, a .22 has far less recoil, giving the shooter a way higher chance of getting rounds to the desired target. Also, when we are talking about hand guns, we ar me generally not concerned with piercing body armor, therefore the actual power of the round is null. If it can pierce flesh and fracture bone, it's just as good as the next one.

.380 has come a long way especially with these new fluted rounds. They penetrate much better which is more important since .380 doesnt typically have the velocity to expand and penetrate to viable depths.

I was talking about self and home defense. It's generally agreed M1911 is best when it comes to both carry & home defense. There are plenty of guns for all kinds of people but that's the bread and butter of self defense. I carry a Magnum but it's because I live in bear country.

The absolute shortest shotgun you can legally buy without sacrificing your first born child to the ATF is at the very least 2" longer than the shortest rifle you can buy.
Pump action shotguns require manual manipulation of the pump which can easily be fumbled and result in user induced failure, often come with stocks that have far too long of a LOP for properly "squaring up" to a target, and defensive shotgun loads are fucking brutal to teach new shooters on. You have to keep shotguns without a round chambered not for the meme reason you gave but because none of them are drop safe. Reloads are going to be slow as fuck and the sights are invariably going to be garbage.
Compare that to the sheer user friendly simplicity of the AR 15. OP could throw a 30 round magazine in the gun, chamber a round, flick on the saftey and leave it in his closet until the day came that he needed it. He could even buy a nice optic to throw on the rifle to take away most of the difficulty in firing accurately under stress. Literally any ammo he buys will be suitable for self-defense and as long as he can manage the nearly non existent recoil of the .223 well enough to land a shot or two on target then he'll be fine.
