My wife is a Shanghainese and there is a huge difference between her generation and that of her parents. Not so much in an ethno-nationalist sense ( even modern Chinese are pretty nationalist and conservative which is a big plus ) but more of a sense of ethics and value of human life. To her parents life is worthless, work is the only thing that counts. They literally told their own daughter that they picked her up from the trash and that she is a waste of time and money. Her parents work 12 hours a day and 7 days a week despite having plenty of money in the bank ( well over $4 million ) and owning several houses in central Shanghai.
Their ethics are completely terrible, but at least they still have a culture and they still have room to improve. Unlike Europe which has great ethics but which is flushing their own culture and national identities down the drain only to be replaced by the depravity of Africa and the Middle-East. The more time goes on the more I feel West-Europe is going down in terms of civility while many Asian countries are steadily making improvements. At this point the only hope Europe has left to retain our own culture and values is East-Europe.
