We'll agree that Trump is a populist, right? What makes Trump unique is his approach to branding, speech, etc. He doesn't get up and debate with facts. He doesn't speak about Truth and Reason, and he rarely outlines specific policy. Instead he speaks about emotional truths by using hyperbole.
Even better, recognizing that his opposition won't attempt to debate with Truth and Reason because the liberal jump to "muh feels", he breaks the system and goes straight to "smug anime face". He knows that he cannot break the momentum of the delusion of "He's LITERALLY HITLER" that's further echoed by the media by speaking calmly and reasonably. Instead he simply out does them with
