Long time lurker first time poster here, there's something that has always been nagging me. If the US cut its defense spending by say 15%, wouldnt we be able to afford universal health care?
Like whats so wrong with breaking your arm, or say, needing a CAT scan after a head injury, and being able to simply walk into a hospital and be able to receive treatment without putting yourself in debt?
Do we really have to defend ourselves with hundreds of billions of dollars? I thought the two oceans and allies are supposed to help defend us so why do we need all this wasteful spending on "defense"?

We don't even need "defense". No one attacks us. We dominate the world. China may be able to take us, but China doesn't run planes into the world trade center like a bullied kid bringing a gun to school - only moron religious dickheads do that shit. China realizes that world economic upheaval would hurt them more than help them. America is their biggest consumer. We're "at war" with "terror", but there's nothing for us to be truly terrified about. The few religious fanatics that want us all dead only exist at all because they hide like cowards. I think we could cut defense by 30-40%, cut funding for aid entirely for all of those places on earth that perpetuate religious fanaticism and we'd have all the money we'd need for universal healthcare and free education for OUR citizens. I also think that our soldiers should be more like the roman army; roman military built aqueducts and roads and other infrastructure while they were "defending" the cities. Not only did it make life better for everyone, it produced better soldiers with skills to keep them going after they left the military.
