No violence, economic treaties are devised, military alliances formed to protect each other should any foreign attack occur, and everybody's happy. The left coast can be as socialist as they want and the south can be as classically liberal as they want. Clearly just trying to force everybody together is just going to end in disaster.

It would make more sense for that nation to simply cast them out to other nations, who would probably accept them anyway. The goal of any balkanization is to avoid mass violence.
