I do strongly recommend reading the Old Testament apocrypha, and non-canonical books. The Book of Enoch (which many early church fathers considered canon) is the most important, by far. There was also probably another fall after the flood around the time of Nimrod, when God entrusted leadership to a council of holy angels who turned around and fell. Luke and acts are really the same book, were just split on different scrolls, and Luke was supposed to have been some sort of doctor. The writing style is a bit more suited to modern reading styles.
The book of Romans is cool because it was written by a Jew (Paul) who converted, and it's intended for a group of people who didn't already understand Judaism well, or weren't already converts themselves.
So it's a good explanation for newbies, written by a leader of the movement who was a highly educated expert of both Judaism and Christianity.
