For the longest time I was the guy that if you asked me about travel, I'd say, "Why yes, I do enjoy to travel! It's a lot of fun and allows you to see other cultures and people and parts of the world! What's not to love?" The only places I'd gone would have been white washed areas of Mexico, and same with Belize. People think they're so worldly and wonderful whenever they've been to places everyone else has been. Yes, Cabo San Lucas is beautiful, but is it real "travel?" No, it's not. It's a place that's very nice to look that serves for fuck all except a view and a place to get drunk with your girls. This is what makes me angry about people claiming they "travel."
All of this changed for me, however, when I went to China this summer. I had two weeks of complete, unadulterated, beauty in this strange land. I wasn't just wasting money in Macau or sightseeing in Hong Kong, I drove across that entire bitch to see the real face of one of the largest countries in the world.
Sure, we did the tourist things like the wall (incredible) and the terra cotta warriors (also great) but the most pure moments of exploration were when we went off the path and did whatever the fuck we felt like doing. We would hop in taxis to get across town, and the completely non english speaking driver would drive on some small bike sidewalks with two lanes of cars somehow to get somewhere 30 seconds faster than if he'd taken a road. Or stopping on the side of the road an hour outside of beijing to buy from a woman's fruit stand and eat a watermelon with her. Another time we said "fuck it" and drove into the mountains outside of xi'an for fun, and found a buddhist monk monastery and walked around there for the day.

These are the types of experiences that have made my life worth living. Scrapping, being generally exhausted and worn down for two weeks, and struggling to do anything in such an alien land may sound awful to these instagram photographers, and I hope it does. They can be content with their jetsets to the caribbean, but I can't help but feel they'll never get that authentic feeling of exploration and wonder at the world that's just waiting to be had.
To end a very wordy post-- please travel. Go somewhere you'd never expect yourself going. I was not alone, but the time I did spend alone, I felt I learned more about myself than a lot of my time in the United States. Things move slower, and you can take it all in at your own pace. It's truly a marvelous thing.

This. I have actually been all over the world due to having a rich family and then also did all the standard pre and post uni travelling but going far more obscure seen as i had already done thailand, vietnam etc a few times growing up.
I never learned too much, you just have fun, pay token attention to sites and the people in the countries are never deep or worldy, they're either just getting on with their day as normal people or they're trying to rip off tourists. Except arabs, they stand out for being aggressive and lazy.
