We have had pope's who were murderers, adulterers, and degenerates. We have had popes who became saints. Some we're crusaders. Some were pacifists. But all wee popes, and despite them, the Church lives on. The Church has it's teachings (read your catechism) and beliefs which are not hinged upon the whim of a pope...or pastor, or minister, or any other drooling idiot who thinks that merely accepting Christ in their heart and being able to read makes them any authority at all on the faith. So, if you disagree with something a pope does or says, ask yourself: "Is this things something the Pope is doing for himself, or is this an imperative driving my faith? If it is an imperative driving my faith, and it makes me uncomfortable, is it I who am wrong? Must I change? And how far?" If at the end of the day the actions of one Pope - or even 30 popes or just another Catholic's actions - keeps you away from Christ, you were never his to begin with. You first must trust Christ and believe him when he promised Peter: "You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church...and the gates of hell will not prevail against it". If the Church is wrong, then hell has prevailed against it and Jesus is a liar and we are all fools along with every blood stained martyr crying out to heaven for thirst for God. All fools. Are we fools? Are you a fool? Was Jesus a sham? No. Have faith. Your guilty conscience comes not from the Church but from your heart. If today you hear his voice, harden not your heart. Have faith. There will be more popes. There will be many challenges. But there is one God, one True Church, and one true faith. Be true. Be Catholic.

This isn't how the papacy works. Antipopes elect or appoint themselves. I'm a huge fan of Benedict XVI myself (love Truth and Tolerance), but he did step down and the college or Cardinals did elect Francis. I'm sure Benedict XVI would have no problem publicly decrying an actual antipope would one manage to find himself in the Vatican.

It is. The show is about a man who happens to be Pope. This man is an orphan. This man is lonely and broken. So he rigidly adheres to conservative/traditional Catholicism in place of what he lacks (love, namely from the parents who left him behind). He was elected by a fluke, and Cardinals work against him to that him. As the show progresses, the Pope's journey transforms himself and those around him. He becomes an odd instrument of grace. And then he himself meets his own conversion from a broken man to a whole man. There is lots of raunch and absurdity along the way, just as in life. Totally worth a watch.

Yeah, he's not a real Antipope, but Benedict still being around makes it a bit more complicated. I read an article about it but I can't find it anymore. The core of it was that this unique situation makes it so that Benedict still has some form of special authority in the church. I really hope we can get over this Francis nonsense really soon. I'm always taken aback whenever someone criticizes a belief by saying "why would you want to believe in X?" as if wanting something to be true affected whether you should believe it.
There's this attitude where people approach religion like fashion. "I really haven't found a religion that fits me." People mix and match as if reality were subservient to individual whim.
The fact is that if you accept the premise of Christianity and the Bible, it doesn't matter if you find a certain theology distasteful because your sense of taste does not determine what reality is or what is right. This is in accordance with the spirit of Sup Forums I think.
Believe the truth not because it fits your preferences, but because it is demonstrably true.

There were worse popes than Francis throughout Church's long history. It will get better. Pray rosary, and don't fall for modernity's traps.
