It's what they have to lose. Think of post-war Japan and German, now the 3rd & 4th economies in the world. South Korea now ranks 12th.

A united Korea would be a South Korea twice the size it is now, and would be an economic powerhouse right on China's border. They don't want that competition.

It would take decades, perhaps even a century for south Korea to integrate the dprk into its economy. Hell east Germany is still far behind twenty five years later. A unified Korea wouldn't be a meaningful threat to China for at least five decades.

There's rumors China exploits the prison system of the dprk as slave labor but slaves aren't worth this much mucking around either.
