They were able to replace veneration of their own minor deities with Patron Saints that essentially filled the same role. Not exclusively. Huge portions of Europe have brown eyes and/or hair. Lighter features only really became widespread in a certain portion of Europe. Even in overwhelmingly white countries like Norway, 12% of the white population there have brown eyes.
