I think capitalists often overlook the fact that resources and money isn't everything. What makes you happy isn't what you have, but how you are compared to other people. That's why if you visit really poor countries, you'll notice people there are much happier, because they are all in the same boat and don't feel inferior.
In capitalist societies, everyone is richer, but there are many gaps, which makes people feel inferior, which creates conflict. That's why mental health drugs are skyrocketing in america and most people are depresssed.

Consumption is a natural result of having wealth. If you have a lot of wealth and you are not a consumer, you usually try to keep your money's worth by investing in companies that create and encourage more consumerism.
In all the poor countries I've visited people the consumeristic life of people in the west, but they couldn't have it. Still, they lived and workedd together in large families and had a very happy lifestyle compared to most people I know in the west.
A person middle class person who only knows millionaires will be much more depressed than a poor peasant who lives around other peasants. Because the middle class person will always feel inferior, will have a tougher time attracting women, having a way to feel proud about himself, etc.
