You can't have larger armies without a sense of brotherhood or belonging to an authority that encapsulates the whole of the army. This is why crusades are able to occur, with the authority being Religion.
More likely than not, I feel that things can go one of two ways, in terms of how people identify themselves with respect to the rest of the world.
1.) People sub-sectionalize themselves, splitting themselves into smaller and smaller groups, where what county or town you come from matters more than the country, state, or continent. This is unlikely.
2.) People will attach themselves to more encapsulating authority, as technology and trade tie countries closer together. In previous decades, it was conflicts on scales of country vs. country, with the groups between them fighting about which group is better suited to exist. These days, the hatred between the Polish and Spanish are lessened because it is not realistic to wage wars with such large populations, and it would run the country bankrupt considering all the bureaucracy required. So, race identity, a very large encapsulator, may very well be the new method by which wars or group identifiers occur. A Polish man may soon say he is white rather than a pole, a French mother may say she gives birth to white children rather than french children. This, very likely, will continue, and reach a fever pitch, as nationalism once did, and then give way to the next larger encapsulator: humanity. By that point spacefaring will likely be a much more prevalent occurrence, and interplanetary or interstellar travel, with the discovery of alien life will occur, and then the divisor becomes species.
