I have noticed this too, but I don't know why they do it. The local lodge in my small town is 75 feet from the largest and oldest church in town, it seems to be a common occurrence. I understand that it could be coincidence, in the midwest there is practically a church on every other city block. Still, this trend seems so pervasive it's hard to believe it was unintentional.

I have a feeling that whatever the Freemasons are that they're very decentralized and there are a lot of different causes and branches.

I grew up in Arkansas and they had a lodge for about every town, my town had one in the second floor of a flower shop right next to city hall. My dad's friend was a mason and he said they have some pretty weird rules like how they're not allowed to say anything that might make you want to join the group, and that they had this voting process for who they let in.

How they vote people in is they have one of the members elect someone to join, then every member in that local lodge votes by putting balls in a bag anonymously, and if someone puts in a black ball then it means they're not allowed to join because the vote wasn't unanimous.

Anyway, the people where I grew up didn't fear them really, usually people with lots of money were masons and even one time my dad and his mason friend got caught hunting on someone's land and they did a secret handshake and ended out being allowed to hunt there all they wanted.

Oh yeah, and The Masons once donated a bunch of money to my school and got a plaque dedicated to them in the hallway.
