If Earth is in the CME's path, the particles interact with our magnetic field. While we're treated to a fantastic light show in the form of the northern lights (which are expected tonight, due to a CME that left the sun on Tuesday), powerful CMEs can cause power grid disruptions. In March 1989, such an event knocked out power to much of Quebec.
While a CME did erupt in the wake of these two solar flares, NASA is still trying to analyze whether or not Earth is in its path.
No, this hasn't happened yet. No, it doesn't take 8 minutes to get here. Disregard any and all shills and disinfo dick heads, Looking at 9/9-9/11 impact.
Joshua Moore
how far south are the lights gonna be?
Luis Wright
>No, it doesn't take 8 minutes to get here Are you fucking stupid? That's basic physics dude.
Dominic Flores
its not light being ejected
Grayson Harris
OP
We just had a massive Aurora down here in NZ over the past few days.
Daniel Taylor
Aurora happens everyday. Your anecdote is probably unrelated.
Joseph Price
You make the rest of us look bad. Please suicide
Owen Johnson
you're shitting me rn right? please, take a basic physics or astronomy class.
I'll give you a head start: light isn't the only thing that travels at the speed of light.
William Perez
idiot, those particles have mass
Austin Gonzalez
the light took 8 minutes to get here, thats how we know it happened the big cloud of charged particles does not move at light speed because they have mass in other words Are you fucking stupid? That's basic physics dude.
Isaac Peterson
It was reported on the news as unnatural.
Ryan Williams
stahp feigning retardation
Joseph Campbell
>disregard all shills and disinfo dickheads
Coronal MASS ejection.
Solar flares most often produce a secondary effect called a coronal mass ejection, or CME. This is a huge cloud of magnetized particles that travels along the solar wind at incredible speeds, sometimes hundreds of kilometres a second.
Jose Hernandez
top fucking kek
you know that protons (light) have no mass and can fly lightspeed
electons and some other shit have a mass, so they can't fly lightspeed
ONLY PROTONS CAN FLY AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT
Christopher Young
Yes, that was from flares in the M range from the 3rd or 4th I believe.
Isaiah Lee
that is from a smaller solar flare a few days ago.
the next one coming is bigger. remember when (in the 90's was it?) when Auckland lost power for some time? A cme caused that.
Evan Howard
That also means if you want to move at the speed of light something with a mass, it would take an infinite amount of energy.
Ian Nguyen
That was caused from a thunderclap from your mothers thunder thighs
Cooper Cruz
I find it suspicious that such an epic flare with accompanying CME is not being updated. The one that blacked out Quebec was orders of magnitude less in scope than this one. This could knock out electronics over a hemisphere.
Levi Murphy
Fuck yourself you dumb kraut. Protons are massive particles. Protons aren't light. Photons are light.
Sebastian Myers
Coronal MASS Ejection
Light doesn't have mass. This is fuckin' plasma, lad.
James Miller
>Sup Forums is too stupid for this happening Kek
Cooper Brooks
how is anyone supposed to enjoy a happening if all the power goes out?
Christopher Rodriguez
Go outside
David Anderson
Yeah, it's starting to feel that way. We need updated data on the CME speed, direction, and size. That being said, if this thing hits anywhere on Earth, it will cause incredible devastation to all nearby electronic infrastructure. A proper EMP is THE happening of the last several centuries.
