It's fun getting ready and adrenaline rush during but after sucks. The clean up, no power leads to a ton of issues. Gas stations can't pump gas without power, no debit credit cards etc. took almost 3 weeks to get power back after Andrew hit la 92. I was youngish and poor no generator. We slept on a screened in porch or risk being sucked dry from mosquitoes. We ate really well the first week, coking all the game in the freezers. Once that was gone it was pb&j.

It's even better if you're lucky enough to be on a route where they have a real dining car (just the Superliner trains now, I believe; I got to eat in one of the Heritage Fleet dining cars a couple of times when they were still using those on the Lake Shore route). Actually getting a seat is somewhat rare unless you're a sleeping car passenger, as they usually take reservations starting from the front of the train, but it's good food.
Yeah, it gets really bad west of Chicago, too. Had to spend an entire day there once coming back from St. Louis because I missed my connection. The government could fix this pretty easily, but they never do (partly because most of the politicians that even care about passenger rail live in a part of the country that never has to deal with the delays).
