How?
Since 1914, Russian Empire/USSR had:
>2.5 million dead in WW1
>5-9 million dead in Russian Civil War and famines that followed it
>900,000 to 2 million White emigres
>7 million people dead during famine in 1932-1933
>26 million people dead during WW2
So that's 41-46 million deaths. Since obviously you can ascribe famine during 30's to Stalin and his government, that would mean Stalin was responsible for some 54 million deaths on top of this.
So apparently since 1914 95-100 million people died in the general area of USSR. 1 to 1.5 million also died in famine in 1946-47.
That region, including Poland and some other territories like Finland, had a population of around 170 million at the outset of WW1. Excluding Poland and Finland, that's roughly some 150 million people.
Soviet population in 1959 was 209 million. There's also census in 1951 which showed 182 million, but let's exclude it cause it was made during Stalin's time.

So a region that had 150 million people, suffered some 90-100 million deaths in the span of 45 years, plus all the poverty and devastation of war and all other shit, and it grew to 209 million in 1959/ 182 million in 1951?
How is this possible?

in 1911 the russian population was 167 million .during 40 something years when every family had around 4 - 5 kids the population only increased by 20 or so percent . I can totaly see the number of people staling killed . Also the reason why the population in the communist period increased so much was because of the ban on contraceptives and general poverty .

When Russia started industrializing, the population grew pretty rapidly. In the early 1800s, it was something like 35 mil and by the early 1900s, it was something like 200 million. That means people were having a lot of kids per family. WW1 as well as 2 was a short lived war and by the time communism took over, people were encouraged to have kids again. By the time communism ended, the Russian population was back down to 150 mil. That means in less then a century, births did almost nothing to the loss of some 50 mil people.
