It'll probably be better than jail as long as you're alone. I got stuck in a jail for a month for a traffic violation and it was fucking awful because they stuck in a huge cell with 15 other people in bunk beds. They gave me the option btw if I wanted to go to a solitary cell instead and I refused because I thought I'd go crazy being alone. What a fucking mistake it was, being with a bunch of other guys going crazy was much, much worse. There were several fights, one ending with one guy with a broken jaw and the other guy getting his sentence extended for several more months. The tension was always there too, you could never relax at all with all those other guys around you just going mad from being together and having nothing else to do.

You learn to pronounce placenames as you learn the language. Somali stupid immigrants manage to learn the language fluently in 2 years. It is kind of like the forefather to english, so you'll get into it fast.

Norwegians generally like Americans, but if you want to connect with the population you should learn the language. Outside of Oslo people aren't very friendly towards non-westerns.

Avoid Oslo, check out the West-Coast. Bergen is a nice city if you like it a little urban, while Ålesund is also considered the nicest city here. West coast south of Tromso, avoid Trondelag.
