China is notorius for maintenance failures, they're only like two generations into and industrial, mechanical society and lack the intrinsic knowledge of machines and how to keep them working. That lack of knowledge means they build second rate stuff, made of low quality materials, due to not understanding the finer points of design and production and then they don't take care of their second rate stuff properly, leading to mechanical failures and deaths.

The dudes break probably failed, and again being a only a second generation owner of motor vehicles, at best, no one ever explained to him at length what to do if your breaks failed, so he just panics crashes and dies.

China has a systemic lack of knowledge about machinery they way Africa has a systemic lack of knowledge about civil society, and like in africa with the sale of modern weapons to bronze ages tribesmen, china acquisition of modern industrial capacity without learning how it all works as you acquire it leads to mayhem.

The only safe way to advance technologically is through organic development and even that is a dangerous path strew with pitfalls. The European age of enlightenment and Imperial/Industrial age that followed wasn't exactly a time of peace.

My point is that china lacks the tribal knowledge of mechanical engineering, they dont have a two hundred years history of mechanics and tinkers learning secrets and passing on knowledge. Not even Japan. Japan barely started the Meiji Revolution right after the end of the Industrialization period. It was very good timing, got access to the good technologies developed by Europe while still being new to the process. Japan had relatively a small technological gap to
fill considering the technology they picked up was easy to understand.

Today with China it's extremely different. For most of the early 20th century China was extremely backward and illiterate. Even Africa had more advanced technologies brought by the colonizers than China. The Chinese recently have closed a technological gap spanning hundreds of years in a few decades, the technology they've had to pick up wasn't simple either. You gotta commend chinks for the good work they've done... From backward peasant rice farmers to a leading country in science.
