When was the last time a masterpiece was created, in your opinion?
For me it was probably Planetes, so 2003-4.

When will reddit stop shilling this show?
There have been loads of better shows in the meantime. Planetes wasnt even AOTS, let alone AOTY.

Go ahead and share your opinins then, user.
For me it's one of the GOAT.

Posting this won't bring moot back, user.

REDLINE was an audiovisual masterpiece. Story and characters not so much, but it didn't really detract from the experience.

Planetes has a distinct flavor to it, probably because it being hard scifi. Not many shows plunge into the hard scifi genre, so that's why it stood out. Sure, there's lots of other good shows since Planetes, but you still can't say it wasn't good. Heck, it might even be AOTS or AOTY back then, but I didn't watch the original airing and wasn't into online discussions back then, so who knows.

Setting - awesome. Hard sci-fi with a realistic view on what a future international community might look like. Good example of how private companies conquer space.

story - mediocre. starts out too slow and addresses unimportant stuff. Plot holes as to how a small band of 3rd world terrorists manages to infiltrate high security space stations. Main antagonist and supporting characters get away pretty much unpunished for the crimes they commited in the end for unexplainable reasons. Good main characters are even happy about that. Also deus ex machinas saving the main characters from the bs they cause.

characters - bad. from main characters that behave like they're taken out of your average afternoon shounen anime to annoying and unfunny side characters that don't serve the story in any why. Yes there's character development, but it can't improve things that weren't even there in the first place

visuals - good, sunrise did well as expected

in the end, an awesome premise was ruined by mediocre writing and characters that don't fit the setting. if oshii mamoru taken ont his show who knows what kind of marvel we could've gotten, GOAT possibly. But the way it is now, it's just a failed masterpiece

>in any why
in any way

Mushishi.

Came here to post this.

great, but i loved tatami galaxy. i would have said anohana if they just did the first episode and never went any further. all episodes after that fell apart.

gr8 b8 m8

...

There's probably something I consider a masterpiece that's more recent, but this is what comes to mind.

Pretty much this.
Planetes had an interesting concept that kept me watching for about ten episodes, but the slow progession and the boring characters simply gave me no incentive to keep watching.

By the time I dropped it I had zero interest in what would happen to the characters or how the story would unfold, failing to captivate its viewers is a hallmark of a "failed masterpiece" if you ask me.

Watching the daily lives of a garbageman in space needs something other than visuals and a good premise, it needs to keep the viewer interested throughout the series.

Alas, it all comes down to personal taste i suppose, some will claim planetes is the GOAT, like Moot.

I explained in detail here: so either contribute something useful or pack your memes and shitposting and get
>>>out/

>needs something other than visuals and a good premise
I-It also had a great sound track.. ;_;

2015

Mayoiga, this season.

When K-On!! aired.

>Expecting good story and characters from anime.

I've been watching anime years and have yet to find an anime with as good characters and story as even a middling novel. Even ones I really enjoy, like Mushishi and Kino no Tabi, are just alright. They tend to lack any subtlety and just bash you over the head with stereotypes constantly.

The only things anime ever does well is concepts, visuals, setting and mood. The feel of them can be great, the substance never is.

>LOST the anime
I don't think so.

Last season.

Rakugo?

Konosuba?

Obviously, what else?

>Who's favourite anime to the point that it was once traditional for either him or mods to ban people shitposting about it
>leddit
No, user.

2014

2 Planetes threads at the same time, what's going on?

>visuals - good, sunrise did well as expected

It looks like shit.

>Moot

Anyways, I always thought the ebin "Retards in space!" post was just a joke. I was shocked at how right that guy was when I first watched Planetes.

The characters in NGE are pretty amazing.
But I agree, good characters are an exception.

Personally I really liked the MC of Planetes.
Having a huge goal but not working for it because you know you can't reach it.
Subconsciously searching for an excuse that you can't pursue it.
Having to choose either your career or your friends and family.

Hyouge Mono

>It looks like shit
>posts screenshot where it is show to look great

>NGE had amazing characters.

Which ones? The generic angsty whiny protag, the quiet girl, the tsundere cunt, the slutty older lady, the "Cool guy", the evil master mind or his lacky?

>Hyouge Mono
>In the Sengoku period, when the shadow of Oda Nobunaga was still cast over the land, the warlord Furuta Sasuke lost his soul to the tea ceremony. While war shook the world around him, he faced his own conflict between his desire for promotion and his love for his art.

That sounds like the most hipster bullshit I've ever heard.

OH SO AAAAAAAAAAAAAAASIAN

user the majority of the show looks like this and you know it.

>The generic angsty whiny protag, the quiet girl, the tsundere cunt, the slutty older lady, the "Cool guy", the evil master mind or his lacky?

Yes, those.

go rewatch bebop burgerclap

Should I watch the name if I really loved the manga

I hear it's pretty different with even completely new characters in some places

the overall anime plot and thematic arcs are more coherent even if different.

the only thing I could never really get into was the addition of the nip office culture thing.

also, not enough of based rocket nazi.

2013

1989

Planetes was the anime that affected my life the most, it completely changed my views toward life and my future, it was also a big part in the choice of my degree.
Was it a masterpiece? Probably
Did it manage to relay a message and some kind of feeling to the audience? Absolutely

This is bait, right? RIGHT?

story wise was a clusterfuck, but animation and OST still gaves me a raging boner to this day

Suffers adaptation decay, filler (Moon Narutards) and an anime original final arc that left me raging.

2014 had Tamako Love Story, Ping Pong, Space Dandy and Shirobako all of which I'd consider masterpieces.

>japanese animation using japanese history as a setting
>hipster bullshit
Dear Lord.

@141124969
Fuck off.

January 2010.

>how do I Sup Forums

I did that on purpose.

>hurrdurr

>I was only pretending to be retarded
For what purpose?

Because that's all stale b8 deserves.

That, and a report.

>merely pretending

Also
>rec thread

Dissappearance of Haruhi.

>I was intentionaly retarded

Clearly, if they put Gunbuster as a one.

2015
Watching all the now grown up kids in Fafner Exodus picking a career path, pursuing their dreams to be an idol, getting married and paying the price for happiness was quite something.

This pretty much sums up my entire view on Planetes. Great idea, great visuals, cruddy everything else. Should have focused more on the sci-fi and less on the shit characters that felt like they were copy pasted from some other generic show. I ended up dropping it because a good concept and good visuals can only carry a show so far.

It's especially sad because I was so god damned excited to have some good sci-fi in anim.

If we take masterpiece as critically acclaimed and the greatest work of that artist then it's probably Shirobako. Kaguya-hime maybe, but that's more disputed.

If we're not counting Mayoiga, I can agree on Shirobako.

This

I think it's better than the manga.
The music was really on point. and beautiful animations.

OP here.
I meant your own subjective opinion on it. What you consider a masterpiece.

As I wrote:
>When was the last time a masterpiece was created, in your opinion?
>in your opinion
>For me it was probably Planetes, so 2003-4.
>For me

Oh, then like last year with Eupho / Anthem / Hokusai / LWA.

Would the new Yamato count? It was just a remake of the old one, but it was the closest thing to a masterpiece I've seen recently.

Last year.

My fellow Sup Forumsesthete.

Shirobako started in 2014, that's two years ago.

Still haven't found anything i liked as much as tatami galaxy

Ping Pong?

But he was a well-known casual who saw

Jesus Christ.

Good thing we're talking about my opinions and not yours, eh?

I love that one too, but Tatami is still my favorite

Ergo Proxy tbqh

Tell me about it. I'd probably kill myself if those were my opinions.

The last masterpiece was Ping Pong. There've been a few near-masterpieces since then but no 10/10 shows IMO.

ITT: pretentious shit.

So what's the most recent thing you'd call a masterpiece?

Every kyoani series is a masterpiece.

>there are still people who haven't seen this image

Weird.

The story wasn't a clusterfuck.

I'd probably side with

What is Phantom Sales, Alex?

Code Geass. No series kept me laughing and at the edge of my seat between episodes as much as CG. Sup Forums had 24/7 active thread before, during and after both seasons. Not many anime had that going for them.

Cause sales = quality right?

I've never been /m/ enough to enjoy that series but I've heard good things. Maybe one day I'll check it out.

Fuck that pretentious piece of garbage.

It was pretty bad though.

Anyone who uses the term pretentious should be culled from society at once.

Are you telling me Limit Cycle isn't pretentious?

>trying to invalidate words that describe your favorite anime
Tatami Galaxay fan spotted.

user all you gotta do is not be pretentious.

Oh look a tripfag with a shit opinion.

A little advice, you may think you are totally anonymous online, but there's always someone who can find you, and it could effect you in real life. In no way is that a threat or anything but, not thinking before posting stuff online can hurt you in real life. I've been online since I dialed into bbs. I've watched it grown and flex and change. I've seen bad things happen to good people because they thought they where safe. So I guess what I'm saying is, don't believe just because you think you have anonymity online that there can be no repercussions in real life.

Because there can.

I don't think a masterpiece doesn't have to be "perfect" to be considered one.
A 10/10 anime doesn't have to be masterpiece when a 8/10 can.
For me a msterpiece has to be 3 things:
Timeless
Revolutionnary
Unique (have it's own iidentity)

So like it or not, even DB can be considered a masterpiece in some way.

*identity

Don't be annoying, answer the OP question.

Unless you're a mod you cannot see someone's IP and even then you're only getting a geographical location without anything concrete.

By the way are you admitting to or pretending to be a mod or have modlike powers? Please go on tripfag.

Let me guess, you graduated top of your class in the navy seals and my IP is being traced right now
Tell me more tripfriend

K.

Quality post.
