Is he a good character?
Is he a good character?
But no one watches Dragon Ball for character development, so it doesn't really matter.
Yeah, he's a great character.
He is the representation of working and obtain your dreams thru dwtermination and hard work.
That's why he deserves to be the strongest, and that's why most of us want him to achieve his dreams because we feel he suffered and worked for it.
He's a good character the same way Superman is a good character. They sort of are the archetype of a genre.
Goku isn't too complex character but very likeable.
Is there even a character in anime and manga who has very complicated and interesting personality?
literally the perfect waifu
Gary Stu Man being a good character
Please ilustrate me on how he worked for his powers and it's just not another American power fantasy?
USA! USA! We are the strongest! We are number one!
He's dumb as a rock and has never had a single thought about anything other than fighting.
doesn't whine about muh dark past
doesn't go on rants about his pre-school tier morals or life philosophy
doesn't bitch and moan about angsty teenager bullshit
doesn't cry like a bitch
doesn't waste time whining about bitches
isn't a herbivore beta male
does what he loves to do and nobody is going to tell him otherwise
He is by far better than the vast majority of anime protagonists.
But he or the series isn't American...
Amoral fighting maniac who just so happens to fight for what is right more often than not but when it gets right down to it he is just looking for a great challenge even if it means endangering everyone. I would say Vegeta is a better good guy than him in some regards.
needs to become a white man to fight villains
He's an awful family man. That's for sure.
Don't you ever get tired of watching him train to beat the next most omnipotent whatever-the-new-thing-is?
All of them are literally Perseus, or else based on some antecedent that Perseus ripped off.
Would you prefer to watch him whine, cry, and angst for 5 episodes before winning by Deus Ex Machina?
No, because you saw him train as a child until he became comparable to the Gods.
Also, he always goes for more, he is never satisfied with his current power, he asks people to teach him techniques and he learns from them, that's why he deserves to be the best.
Well he wants to fight for good because that is how Gohan raised him.
Don't ever take the first american dub as basis for the original plot. Goku isn't a peace preacher, he's supposedly to be a dumb manchild who barely cares to anything but fight and eat.
Goku will defend his loved ones if they are in danger.
The difference is that he is not going to save the universe from every bad guy out there for the sake of justice.
He is like a gun owner defending his home.
He won't go vigilante and kill every criminal, he will act when his friends or their lives are in danger.
No, same shit like Luffy and Naruto
Goku's nothing like Naruto and Luffy.
You know you've seen too much Dragon Ball when you can recognize OPs pic is from the Broly movie
He actually has a fair share of character development in the manga so yeah he's a good character and Toriyama used him well by not having him doing everything in DBZ. Seriously he mostly shows up at the end of an arc
Cant wait for the training arc for goku to go super saiyan god 3 kaiyo ken x 100 ultimate mega form and then fight in a tournament
then we hit the reset button and get SSJG 2 SSJ electric boogaloo in the jungle
He is at times. Other times, not so much
He's actually kinda interesting. There's a complexity to his simplicity.
He's an absolute moron, but a moron with literally the power of a god. He's kind-hearted, but also not a saint, and actively enjoys violence to a point where he will allow enemies to escape so they can become stronger, so he can fight them again. It takes a lot to make him take things seriously.
Which raises the question, is Goku a good person?
I really don't know the answer to that, and I think that makes him an interesting character.
Goku is an ok character overall, simple in his mindset and easygoing. My actual problem with him is that he spawned characters that pretty much ripped off that archetype. It can only be entertaining for so long.
Goku is the best protagonist
Goku is only a moron when he's a little kid. By the second half of the series he's basically a sage. The anime really screwed up his characterization.
that's how it usually is anon
Also genetics, let's not forget that.
tenshinhan worked harder than anyone but he's just a jobber
fucker did nothing but train for the entirety of the series
Goku is a combo of hard work, willpower, genetics and character. A guy like him is just meant to stand above others who only have one or two of these checked.
That could be said about every shounen protagonist.
And it doesn't make a good character.
Young people like them because it supports their believe that they can archive everything and become the best if they work hard enough, which is quite immature. That's all.
That doesn't make a good character. In the context of the show it's fine and it works but a character like that is boring on his own. It's artificial and there's not conflict.
check, fucker stopped a super dodon ray with sheer willpower
i dont know what you mean by this but anything you may mean with it probably applies to tenshinhan as well
actually dragon ball is super depressing, the moral is that genetics trumps all no matter how hard you work
This just kills me
He hasn't got those sweet Saiyan genes.
I'd say one of the biggest morals from DBZ is offhandedly promoting Darwinism. The villains are bred from the best warriors' genes and pick out some of their best abilities. Humans are strong, but they just don't compare to Saiyans. Saiyans are strong, but they just don't compare to human-saiyan hybrids. It's all about genes
I mean something innate and immutable. Goku lives for the fight in the most pure sense possible, more than any other character. It's what alludes humans like Tien who train all their life or even a fellow Saiyan like Vegeta who is born for the fight.
why dont the humans ask bulma to give them saiyan gene therapy?
Trips confirm, Vegeta fights to win, Goku fights for the sole purpose of overcoming a challenge
Who is the one that inspired Tenshinhan to do that and change from smug edgelord to the person who is now?
I believe it was Mr. Jackie Chun?
he wasn't always like that so it doesn't count
Who inspired Goku to not be a smug edgelord whose mission was to genocide the Earth?
depressing, the moral is that genetics trumps all no matter how hard you work
If that was trued Vegeta would be the MC since he is a prince/natural born warrior or Gohan who as a natural potential that surpassed his father and uses anger/potential unlocks rather than hard work to boost his power. But Goku is a low class warrior with canon brain damage but he never stops training and always looks for new a chalenge. You are only mad because he is not human.
Saiyan and Humans are not comparable when it comes to fight.
Saiyan have genes that give them no real limit and zenkai. They are literally born to fight.
Humans are not.
Also being a prince or a king has nothing to do with having better genes.
A rock at the buttom of a cliff
Learn to read
Also garbage that speaks against the moral of hard work.
Saiyans are strong, but they just don't compare to human-saiyan hybrids.
Even as a kid this never made sense.
Hybrids should be stronger than humans but weaker than Saiyans, alot weaker.
Saiyans are barbarians that are ruled by their strongest warrior
Also being a prince or a king has nothing to do with having better genes.
Hurt Durr retard much
tfw anon doesn't know what words mean but want to use them anyway
well right now it's true
I'm just glad it gives humans even a remote level of relevance
You do know that he ruled because was smarter than the average saiyan and had the idea to rebel against tsufurus?
If he smarter that just confirms that he as superior genes
Go tell that to Stephen Hakwkings.
being smarter means you are stronger
I think the logic behind it was that hybrids had all the potential to become powerful like Saiyans but their human half tempered the Saiyan's feral nature. The 'bad' part is that the hybrid don't care as much for fighting and they don't max their potential.
Learn the language Pedro
Is weird tough. Humans are very violent creatures containing their animalistic desires. Put humans in a lawless scenario and we start killing, raping each other.
being smarter than the average person means you are also stronger than the average person
People who disregard arguments over superficial things should just die.
...ptut humans in a lawless scenario and they will build a society with laws
Goku, Tenshinhan, Piccolo and Vegeta all do nothing but train everyday.
Vegeta is a better character.
The tsufurujin aren't in the manga
Toriyama said they are cuser
You need to look up what the word canon means
Whatever he says is canon then becomes canon.
I'll do it for you
a collection or list of sacred books accepted as genuine
For Dragon Ball the manga is the canon.
Sp when george lucas say something is not canon he is wrong because there is a comic tha contradicts him?
Akira Toriyama worked on the manga, Lucas didn't work on just about any of the comics. Also, in GLORIOUS NIPPON manga tends to be the basis for the canon which is them adapted into an anime series.
Not after namek
Lucas did not work on comics but he said some are canon.
It is up to the author to choose what is canon and what is not canon.
If you write a story and the decide to add some details after you finished publishing it, those details are still canon.
Who would win, Hercule or Yamcha?
goku got married, started a family, and had sex with chi chi at least two times
tenshinhan was training while goku was neglecting his gains for pussy
I'm gonna post some of my favorite Goku moments
I was just about to post this pic familia.
jumps and grabs a Dragon Ball
I always thought this was hilarious. You'd think they'd continue to do that in the future but they just let them fly about for fun.
I think I've gotten to the point where every moment is my favorite moment
I love that Goku had the foresight to keep the Dragon Balls a secret from Raditz.
Keep posting, Goku bro.
"What a waste"
i think the basis of his character is that he wishes people could just fight for the sake of fighting, not to take advantage of weak people. he loves to fight and wants other people to enjoy fighting him just for the sake of a challenge.
The average Saiyan was a mook working for Frieza. The strongest Saiyans back when Planet Vegeta was there were Vegeta & King Vegeta, the former being stronger than the latter when he was a kid. Goku's friends were way beyond the average Saiyan by the time King Kai finished training them.
It's a real shame that Goku only meets Bulma's parents twice in the entire manga.
I'm just gonna post this whole scene since I love it so much and no one ever talks about it
I bet there are people here who thought that Teamfourstar came up with this joke
Keep going, bruv.
Goku's complete lack of hesitation in going to Namek says a lot about his character. He goes from the hospital bed to the spaceship in about 5 minutes.
I think one of the best ways to make a character seem cool is to take them totally out of their element but still have them succeed. There's just something so awesome about Goku training with a super high tech gravity machine on a spaceship.
Ok I'm gonna start jumping again
That last panel
Aw, man, that's pretty clever.
I can't resist posting the entire chapter
bwahahaha. really? now what makes a good character. hope its not pic realated buddy.
fucking Sup Forums elitists thinking they know the superior way of telling after reading manga.
Sounds find to me
I love this whole section of the fight where Goku is just warming up and Freeza is enjoying himself. Neither of them quite realize yet how strong the other is.
You can see that as the fight goes on Goku keeps on winning more.
Goku is pretty awesome all the way through
I just hate it how smashing someone against shit means nothing by this point.
I really love this chapter
Goku caring about sex
This was a good chapter to post to show how Goku acts during fights.
Yeah, people really forget that Goku's training with Kami really had a pretty drastic effect on his character.
Toriyama always knew exactly how to make someone look cool
Nope he was able to use the Kamehameha after he saw it once. He is only "smart" when is about fighting. For everything else he is a dumbass.
Moments like these are why King Piccolo was my favorite arc
Goku definitely gets smarter as he grows up. Just compare the number drawing scene at the 22nd Budokai to the one in the epilogue.
How could you forget one of the best Goku scenes?
There are not enough minutes in a day to post all of Goku's best scenes
Toriyama action scenes are somehow still the best in any manga ever
There are times when I think Dragonball is overrated but then I re-read it and think otherwise. It was also one of the things about Dragonball which didn't get worse, as power levels and sameface started to get out of hand in the much later arcs, all the fights were still drawn and laid out very well.
He was in DB
you place too much confidence in your strength and as a result, you leave yourself wide open
20 years later, THE LASER AND AGAINST FUCKING FREEZER
fuck you toriyama
Well I think you tend to look Dragon Ball in a different light when you learn that Toriyama kind of half-assed the whole thing week to week. In the sense that Toriyama is probably some kind of crazy genius
Yes, there were some part where Goku was better than he was in DB
This guy analyzes it pretty well an compares it to JoJo manuelamalasanya.wordpress.com
The anime movies always sucked
tenshinhan have a girlfriend, lunch.
Definitely not, he lets his love of combat drive him to endanger his family and the earth multiple times.
If you mean in the sense that he's well written then no, because they try to paint him as a hero when it's made obvious that he only cares about fighting.
Really though, the guy apparently spent over 3 days a week just messing about & the last few days actually getting shit done. I wonder how he manages.
because they try to paint him as a hero
Because Toriyama most certainly does not.
This "Goku only cares about fighting" meme needs to die. Yes, he spared Vegeta to fight him again ONE time and it wasn't that bad of a choice since he helped them on Namek and Goku had a few trump cards to use against him with prep time, like the Genkidama.
Then he gives a senzu to Cell but it's not like it'd have changed anything. Actually it's probably for the best to play on that so he'd try to see Gohan's full power instead of worrying about getting tired and destroying the Earth early.
It's just people who never read the manga and misunderstood that one Toriyama interview who want to pretend to understand something more than "normal" people do.
My question is more of WHY he doesn't only care about fighting.
What possible reason does he have for caring about the earth? What have those weaklings ever done for him aside from need saving all the time?
He likes these guys. He cried when Krilin died. He wanted the Earth to be safe at the cost of his life. He's a hero, but not in the conventional sense of the word
Well I think he does like his sons. And Bulma and Kuririn are his best friends, like he's actually called him his friends.
Also it has the best food
One thing many don't know is that Perfect Cell never went full power against Goku & outclassed Goku in many ways. After realizing the difference between Cell and himself, Goku decided that the only way to win is for Gohan to be pressured enough to go SSJ2.
Why the fuck wouldn't he care about the earth? He grew up on the damned planet and Grandpa Gohan raised him to be a good little boy, not an edgemaster apeman. Or are we just going to forget all about the latter?
Dead Zone was awesome feck you
So now half of the Dragonball fanbase thinks Goku is Superman, and the other half thinks he's just a straight up asshole with no sense of humanity.
No no, not the Z fighters and his family.
He spent a lifetime fighting for them and with them to defeat new threats and grow stronger as a warrior.
I mean the other earthlings who have never done anything to be worthy of his attention. It's never explained why he loves life and fights to protect it.
It's one thing to be non-aggressive but he's protecting total strangers for no reason other than "just because". With no drive or motivation being stated or even hinted at.
He just knows killing is wrong. As a kid he knew killing good guys was a bad thing (one arc was him trying to resurrect some indian dad, another was him freeing a village from the Red Ribbon Army and he got shot just to protect the mayor's life). But he killed bad guys without blinking because he didn't care about those.
Then he trained with Kamisama, and stopped killing bad guys too, unless if necessary.
To him, Earthlings are good guys, he bonds with them pretty quickly, even if he spends all his time training he knows their lives are valuable.
Goku is just nice, he doesn't need a motivation to not want innocent people to be murdered.
Also when Cell destroyed the army, he was mad af and decided to search for new Dragon Balls
Jesus man, are you so far gone that you forget most people aren't apathetic edgelords? He's literally pure hearted.
With no drive or motivation being stated or even hinted at.
How about innocent people shouldn't be killed?
With no drive or motivation being stated or even hinted at.
Yeah, sure. Besides that little thing where he's a simple, good-hearted, hick boy.
He has more good stories than your favorite mangaka does more than likely.
I forgot about Kami.
No no, you've got it all wrong, it's just that I don't get how a bump on the head completely got rid of millions of years of evolution that turned his race into a group of savages so wild they destroyed their original home planet.
It was also education. Grandpa Gohan and Mutenroshi made him grow well.
Happened in the iron giant too.
A complete no brainer retard, he appeasl to a retarded audience, that's why DBZ fandom is even more autistic and atrocious than Narutards.
you know i'm right
No your not.
keep talking this way and i'll dick you so hard we'll both end up bleeding
Goku will never know about his parents love for him
Side note, why did Goten and Trunks as they got older focus more on getting laid/being lazy unlike Gohan, Vegeta and Goku?
-He literally had amnesia
-He was raised properly
-He's pure of heart, as due to him being able to ride the cloud
Because they are still half-breeds so that human side made them want to be regular teens
I wish Goku would met Bardock.
Fighting was always fun for them, there was no tragedy or melodrama involved.
Not agreeing with that anon but having amnesia wouldn't get rid of violent inclinations.
If a psychopath was involved in an accident that gave him amnesia he wouldn't suddenly gain empathy and stop killing, he'd just forget that he likes to skin blondes because his babysitter pegged him when he was 10 years old.
I think so. He's a little slow but not insufferably so, and he's likeable enough that he can carry moments where there's no fighting going on. Unlike Vegeta who's boring as shit when it's peace time.
It'll be alright anon
It's still funny that no one has ever mentioned Raditz since he died.
Fucking this I am not even a DBZfag but I can only name a few good shounene protagonists help me out here
Who the fuck else I can't think of any one else who isn't a little bitch.
Uncle Raditz would have been cool.
google hybrid vigor. would have made my day if it turned out Gohan was sterile like in real life too but oh well i guess we got a loli out of it
Yoh couldn't even win he a bitch nigga
and if someone has a bigger gun than him, hes gonna shoot at them too
but having amnesia wouldn't get rid of violent inclinations
Which is acknowledged as his love to fight is due to his Saiyan blood
If a psychopath was involved in an accident that gave him amnesia
He got amnesia as a baby though
I always loved that about Goku, he probably has the most reason to feel guilty about how many times he and his people have fucked things up but instead of moping about it he mans up and goes to immediately deal with whatever problems he's caused.
You won't see Goku sitting around crying because people think he's a freak.
To be fair no one was able to beat Hao
bardock, raditz and goku's mom
Goku's mother probably. She was a cook. Didn't fight.
Yeah I take that back.
All you have to do to get into heaven is not go out of your way to be evil.
Even if you don't go to heaven other world seems like a nice enough place as long as you don't end up in HELL.
You mistyped HFIL
For Manga Goku Bro, do you like or hate Super?
Luffy gets pretty bad with preaching about his ideals but aside from that he pretty much spends all his time adventuring and beating down anyone who tries to stop him.
Chill as fuck inventor that is passionate about his work
Carefree woman who is very willing to satisfy anyone
Are there parents in existence that are based as Bulma's? What a lucky ass woman.
It's shit but I never expected it to be good in the first place. It's better than GT at least.
When does Luffy preach about his ideals? Doffy did that.
What do you hate about it exactly?
Not bad but has gotten very stale.
And then Goku's psychic powers were never mentioned ever again.
Actually, they were, in the Androids saga he saw everything in his dreams. Goku was always depicted as this weird-but-kinda-wise guy in DBZ.
What about the muffin button
why even watch anime then? every show is literally MC trains to beat next bad villan, go back to watching your degen slice of life harem kawaii desu shit faggot
Give me a hug.
For starters literally the entire part where Freeza got brought back to life. I can elaborate if you want, but I can't think of any part of that that wasn't terrible. The worst part is probably all of the Tagoma/Ginyu bullshit. I don't like the other two parts either but they're not totally irredeemable.
That part where they make the wish and the sky turns black.
Piccolo clearly knows something is going on.
Doesn't go to look.
That will never not bug me.
Elaborate, very interested in your thoughts. What do you think of the movie versions of the first two arcs, and the Universe Tournament?
The worst part is he wouldn't have even had to go to see what was happening, he has super god vision. Plus it's not like they wouldn't have sensed a ki as big as Tagoma's.
Toriyama forgets shit a lot, so I can let the god vision thing go. Still, it's plot induced stupidity for Piccolo to know something's up and not investigate.
You guys think we'll see Vegito kicking ass in the 12 Universe tournament.
And that part was from the movie, so it's 100% Toriyama's script.
Only as a Kid
He was so cute!
But he's an alien with limitless ki development potential, unlike humans, if he was a human what you say would be true but he had a jump start and the fact that he is a saiyan is a part on why he can be so powerful (obviously his training is the most of it but still) pretty much every human in the series was taken out or has been left as comic relief
Seriously, there was a time where Saiyans used to bottom up to Frieza whenever Frieza wanted some monkey butt. Most of the Saiyans who've ever lived in Dragon Ball aren't even Nappa level.
Goku can kaioken 10x and not die because of his a saiyan body and he can exponentially increase his power with his super saiyan forms those are big parts of why he is so powerful
The vast majority of the Saiyans couldn't handle Kaio-Ken times two. Son Goku got there through hard work & training. Even the Super Saiyan he achieved through hardships & watching his best friend die.
The Funimation dub changed elements of Goku's character.
Which DB series had the best opening?
It's all about adventures ahead
it was catchy, close second being the high school opening.
The thing people tend to forget about Goku is that he was never properliy educated. He is "grandfather" died when he was very young. He learned how to survive by his own. His second mentor was only good with martial arts and only told him about techniques. And instead of being educated in what's wrong and what's good he learned that all by himself, having his own perspectives. And the majpr thing Goku had in life was fighting and that's the baseof his mentality. The only thing he was properly taught to do.
only told him about techniques
implying he wasn't taught to pleasure women
Anon, why is Goku your waifu?
this fucking scene is so good ahahahaha
Classic Goku biting.
Goku going SSJ for the first time was pretty hype.
How come the Gods of Destruction don't wear underwear?
He was up until super. now he's just an idiot that likes to fight he literally risked Earth just so he can fight in a tournament. It gets to a point where you just throw aside any layer you thought Goku had and are left with this one-dimensional character that only likes to fight others.
So, which groups are still actively doing HQ scans of Dragonball? MofoGoku stopped as far as I know and we are still missing some volumes.
I am still mad that he is absolutely weak. Episode 42 or whatever isn't going to change that, either. Monaka's obviously possessed after all.
dark aura out of nowhere
Either that isn't Monaka, or Monaka is corrupted. It's the only logical explaination.
of course, this series isn't going the route of logic anymore... Their spiky cone-dicks get caught in the fabric, making it hard to fight when they have a battle boner.
why would they
So their asses dont hang out
What do you guys think of the Viz Big 3 in 1 set?
Well I do like the fact he doesn't have the carry the weight of the world on my shoulders complex.
Well, he's not my favorite of the series, but he did start the "Simple Shonen protagonist" trope, least as far as I know. He's a little more interesting in the manga than in the shitty dub, which tried to turn him into Superman.
Goku is a selfish motherfucker. He cares about himself first, others second.
taking anything in DB/DBZ seriously
You must be above 18 to browse this site.
Hes a one dimensional fucktard.
This, imagine what a kid growing up with fucking Shinji or Shirou as a rolemodel would be like.
Except original dub Goku was just that.
He still mostly only cared about fighting, training and eating though.
His muscles actually get smaller after getting out the swords
Didn't notice this whne I saw the movie, does that mean that he never actually empowered himself that much, he simply had sword inside his arms?
Reminder that Toriyama has stated that Goku will never surpass Beerus or Whis.
Reminder that Goku has lost every major fight so far in Super, or at the very least needed to be bailed out by someone else.
It feels like the narrative is evolving somewhat. Winning isn't everything anymore, and win conditions aren't black and white anymore like in Z or even Dragon Ball to a lesser extent. Yet the series still retains the base theme its always had of the "there's always someone better out there so never stop improving".
But now, by giving Goku allies who can actually stand alongside him or even above him, as well as often times less than dire circumstances for confrontation, it gives Goku the ability to fail which, which while he has definitely failed in the past before, he's rarely had so much "freedom" to fail which allows us to understand his character a bit more and see just what kind of person he is. He didn't give a single fuck about walking out of that match with Hit. Of course he knew he was going to lose and decided it wouldn't be worth it if he couldn't even lose to Hit's best performance. but that says a lot about how much the series has changed. Its no longer really about survival, but moreso about the purity of wanting to better yourself.
people who actually watched and cared about DB/DBZ
younger than 18
No, there's a difference between being uneducated and being dumb, goku isnt dumb. He just looks like a moron because he has no concept of social understanding, what with living on his own in the wild as a kid and all. If he was stupid, his son would also be a retard but instead gohan is a top scholar.
Because no one would try to rape them
