This is a problem in the U.S. with so much land that there's no incentive to tear down abandoned buildings like in crowded Europe. I wish that was a job of the EPA or HUD or something, to remove ruins. No "free market" will do that in a country this big.

He bought nearly half of the cities buildings and is clearing out blight on a daily basis. He's buying startups like crazy and expanding. Downtown Detroit is basically all owned by Quicken or a subsidiary of Dan Gilbert now. It's getting better for sure but if he left, it would descend back into chaos.
He had to build his own security team and put cameras on every corner of every street on his buildings because Detroit police were too incompetent to solve simple murders. Now when the police need to review footage, they go to Rock Security (Gilbert's security company).
Honestly it would make a great study as to how the private sector is way more efficient than the public sector. Dan Gilbert had to fucking BEG the city to change the batteries on their parking meters outside his buildings because people were parking there all day since they didn't have to pay. Seriously, the city of fucking Detroit was so lazy and so incompetent that they were willfully throwing away around $2M annual parking meter revenue simply because they were too lazy to swap out bad batteries on parking meters. This is why Democrats need to be kept in check.

My grandparents used to live in Detroit after they moved to America, they used to be able to sleep with their doors open, my grandfather used to sleep on his porch in the summer time with a pillow.
It all started to change. Shortly after he met my grandmother and got a flat in Detroit that was reasonably priced near by his parents house (Was also in Detroit) he noticed a black man.
He said that he wasn't put off by this, but in the coming years as he seen more and more black men he started to resent them. Crime skyrocketed, they had multiple breakins, they literally took over the city in a manner of years and turned what used to be a nice city into a slum.
If you drive down 8 mile you can literally see the gap between the white, somewhat civilized side and the nigger side which looks like an utter warzone.
