Strange had to kill himself to avoid becoming Shuma-Gorath. In doing so this meant Shuma's power could reform and rebirth Shuma-Gorath.

In a parallel earth, Shuma-Gorath managed to kill the concept of Death herself. It stopped death and nothing could die. It sat atop a festering universe and needed the combined might of virtually everything from the genuine 616 universe, including their personification of Death, just to seal off the breach from its dimension. It turned Galactus into a giant DOOMTRAIN.

Every story has revolved around stopping it from entering our plane of existence. Because if it ever does, there's no coming back from it. A parallel universe showed what happens when Shuma breaches their dimension. It's not pretty.

It's mainly just a cameo character that only gets the odd mention here and there. It's never been allowed to have a full blown event because that'd require serious nerfing to stop.
