More like they felt like they were trying to create an "serious"/"artful" anime without having the screenplay for it. Everything about it felt like ZnT is the very definition of an overdirected show. I think that's what makes it memorable as a gateway anime. For me it was the first time I saw that anime could be "dark" and pretentious and shit when all I knew before was sailor moon and pokemon. It may be a shitty show but for someone new as fuck to anime in the mid-2000's it will always have a place in my heart.

More sense, but it is still a bit forced.
They skip 10 chapters or so involving Ushio developing his connection with the spear at the beginning, that makes the arc where they meet Nagare/Beast Ushio shows up feel jarring.
