Because most people have outgrown anime by then

Every once in a while there are anime clearly aimed at an adult audience though. They're just hardly ever set in university.

People have sex at universities. Anime with sex seems to all get classified as hentai.

People have sex in high school too, and in all other places where people over the age of ~15 gather.

How come I'm 25 and kissless virgin?

Because university is where we go to realize that we're never going to make it as normal people. In high school, there's still hope, so watching an anime about high school adventures has a wish fulfillment quality while anime about university feels like picking at a fresh wound.

Because you watch anime.

Your on Sup Forums. Do you need to ask why?

Everybody obviously doesn't have sex, but there's definitely sex going on

High school is a better time for storytelling. It's young people in close proximity coming of age.

University is just high school-lite.

Tatami Galaxy is set in university and was very well received.
Okabe is a college student in Steins Gate.
There is probably other examples.

A SOL about 20-something students aiming to a more mature audience would be cool.
It would be less boring than high school shenanigans, with 14 years old love stories.

It's just a crap middle ground of a story setting that excels in nothing.

>A SOL about 20-something students aiming to a more mature audience would be cool.
Indeed. That is called Honey and Clover.

university would serve all the same purpose as a highschool except people would be taking studying more seriously
theres no benefit since you cant have drugs and sex on tv

Because animators and writers never went to university so they have no idea what it's like.

especially not in Japan.
Even weed is a real rarity there

That makes a lot of sense. If a writer had a university degree they probably wouldn't write LNs.

You guys wanna go smoke some doobies with me behind the bleachers?

>Okabe is a college student in Steins Gate.
What the hell university accepted Okabe? What the shit did he write on his application essay?

yeah dude that would be totally gnarly bro

I dunno, this is something I think about a lot.

The overwhelming majority of anime set in the current era/present/near future is always in a high school setting. Seeing it repeatedly really gives the sense that to the Japanese, life basically ends after high school.

Forget university -- I can think of a few series that are about that (though not many, and the first that comes to mind is OP's image) -- how about an anime about adulthood, period?

I mean, jesus, no wonder Japan is full of suicidal and hopeless people. Everyone seems to have such a rosy and nostalgic memory of their high school days.

It's a stressful time where you either make it or don't. Nobody wants to remember that.

Genshiken and Golden Time

and even high school sucks over there.
Have fun going to school for 8 hours and then 2 hours of cram school after that.

Raw dog, be there or be square.

Man, so true.

Some of the turbo autists on Sup Forums managed to make it into top tier universities. Nothing is impossible.

Theres also Genshiken, but the third season was complete shit.

Can confirm, turbo autist here, somehow Ivy League education, somehow engaged, somehow working, still a turbo autist

There's a few older series like Maison Ikkoku.

Is the majority of the paying audience really teenagers? Because if so, I totally get why high school is the most common setting.

>Japanese people say having classes on a Saturday during HS is no big deal since you only have half a day of classes on that day
>mfw I had no classes on Saturday and still like two afternoons with no classes per week
No wonder they hate life. I was in 2-3 extracurricular activities back then and my schedule still wasn't as busy as your average jap.

School as a setting is much more interesting than university. There's a lot of social acitivity in school and people usually get to know their classmates well. Lots of different subjects from art to physical education, and events such as school festivals. It's easy to write anime/manga/vn that revolves around school life.

Also, everyone went to school and were teenagers at one point, which makes it easy to relate to a high school kid.

What the fuck would it be about? University has way less of the drama, activities and stupidity of HS.
And for good reason, fuck all that shit.

because the audience are shit neets that doesn't go to the college so they don't want a series about people being sucessfull in the college.
also the +20 characters in an anime doesn't go to the college or study at all.

Could be a regular SOL, or about moving out and making it on your own. Many people have their first serious relationship at university.

Why are there literally no anime set in graduate school? I want to be an anime.

Because in Japan (and arguably everywhere else) your life ends when you graduate from high school. You just kinda fizz for a short time, during which you may or may not attend university and then you finally give in to the grey inanity which is what human life really turns out to be.

High school is the worst part of life though if you're not in an anime

I don't know man high school was pretty ok, maybe you should've tried not being such a huge faglord lel.

Sure it's the worst part of life, but anything after it is death, not life anyway.

I'd go back to high school in a heartbeat. Everything was so easy back then.

>What is Tokyo Ghoul

Uni story happen in book and drama more than anime

Shit?

This, the amount of people who can only speculate from anime and sterotype here is baffling.

Ahh i miss orange days. Nodame was really fun too

You can't have cute underaged girls in uni.

The backbone of the industry are lolicons who want to fap to their 12 year old wifu.

Well the one thing i dont think Sup Forums know is that college in japan is atcually much breezier compare to the west. The amount of time you gave up in high school is replenish in uni here. Prof dont even give a rat shit about grades as long as you pass. Unless you major in some hardcore stuffs like medical and maybe engineer then it should make sense that you have to work harder. Still thou, after 1-3 years in uni you have to deal with job hunting season. So that is something they have to work on

>Every once in a while there are anime clearly aimed at an adult audience though
Those people are considered losers who should find interest in a different hobby or focus on making careers.

holy shit, what is this?

You do realize that this entire "mad scientist" thing is just an act so Mayushi doesn't kill herself, right?

Because universities don't have schoolgirls in them.

because people who make anime dont have much experience in university because they never went their, but everyone has gone to high school so its easy to write about something you know

They should make an anime set on Sup Forums then, no sex here.
Which I'm honestly more than fine with.
>Those people you knew who ended up getting a girl pregnant in HS, only to end up with no time to themselves with fuck all money as they need to support their spawn
It literally got me out of my depression as a neet when I saw how much worse I could have turned out. I still have a chance, not those guys.

In Japan, life ends after highschool.

Highschool is a magical mix of being old enough to tell what's going on, and free of responsibilities to enjoy it.
Of course there is study madness in highschool too but they have the time to do it.

Sailor uniforms

Most actors are in their 20s or older, and it's cheaper to film in an apartment set or on the street than to make up a whole high school.

There are other reasons, but part of the reason there are so many stories about teenagers in anime is that it's a lot easier to draw teenagers in school than it is to film them.

>In Japan
It's pretty much everywhere. Unless your parents are rich as fuck you're still going to work a shitty job to earn money. You can probably own your own house if you started saving at 18. Then you need a car, insurance, petrol, mot's, to pay rent unless you have taken out a loan for a house, then interest rates, food, bills, etc.
That or live of wellfare and have fuckall money anyway.
>Those middle class kids who could afford to go to uni (and avoid debt) and have a gap year backpacking across asia
Bastards.

Is that guy half black or can Japs grow afros?

Is it 2004? Do you have enough varied friends to know this for sure? Everyone I know from co-workers to close friends will watch an anime if it's recommended to them.

Anime in Japan is for otaku, user. No one cares what you and your friends like.

This is the condition in california. Those who dont have enough support are stuck at the bottom. Studying is already time consuming, but adding jobs and intern at the same time makes life shadier.

Those kids who travel are usually the one who blew their all of their financial aid too.

>In Japan, life ends after highschool.

Not really, at least no anymore...

A lot of young people decide to stay with parents get an easy job and go out most nights with friends.

That's also one of the main reasons of declining birth rates.

Fuck watchin all these happy HS shenanigans with cute girls is really harsh for my heart these days. My school days were far from perfect but it was the last time in my life when I was truly happy
If I knew adulthood gonna suck this much I wouldn't even bother with studying and just blast my brains out right after graduation
>used to be happy-go-lucky "everything will be daijobu" guy in HS
>now depressed and nihilistic to the core
fuck

Well it's sort of true everywhere else, but in Japan it's worse. The salaryman life in Japan is a living hell of 70 hour work weeks and unpaid overtime.

All the complaints you have about the situation in the west are turned up in Japan. It's why there are so many people who dropped out and become NEETs- you have to fight tooth and nail for the privilege of working 70 hours a week.

I want to know too!

>Those kids who travel are usually the one who blew their all of their financial aid too.
Really?
Because the ones who travel were already upper middle class in my experience. Other people got into debt, but that was jsut from uni, they couldnt afford gap year bullshit too.

I also assume Cali is polarized, on one hand you have mexicans. On the other hand you have rich SJW types who have never lacked money. Atleast thats what I have gathered it's like.

Oh fuck off. Seinen is aimed at adults, both in theory and in practice.
Children aren't staying up until 2am every night and spending hundreds of dollars on BDs and ecchi merchandise.
Anime is looked down upon in certain circles and stigmatized as childish, but nowhere near to the same extent as in the West. And manga has virtually no stigma.
Many Japanese adults watch anime, everyone knows they watch anime, and the series are written with them in mind.

Actually non shounen/mecha anime is aimed at young adults, who have jobs and can actually pay for all the overpriced crap they want to sell them.

Also you do not outgrow anime unless you just watch those same shounen/mecha shows.

We are here forever.

>>That's also one of the main reasons of declining birth rates.
>Increased socialisation between young men and women is reducing birth rates

Nice one shitlord

Yamada from H&C was an undergraduate and then a graduate student in the series

>anime about PhD student suffering

I don't want to get triggered

>Many Japanese adults watch anime, everyone knows they watch anime, and the series are written with them in mind.
See;

>I'm on animu board telling people that animu is for children
What are you even trying to accomplish here?

I hate university, it wasn't great for me.
That said anime with college age people and set in unis were pretty cool, like tatami galaxy, moyashimon, H&C, etc.

>set in university
NEETs don't want to look at characters who are better than them

Now this is why I dont understand Japanese people. Salarman lifestyle is shit, so why not pick a different job or move to the countryside and try to live on your own? You can own guns in Japan, the country has lots of space and iot's probably cheaper than city life. I mean they even have boar and deer to shoot, it seems like a no brainer.

worldtell.com/women-on-the-hunt/
>qt girls hunting
>You can get to eat quality meat regularly
>Enjoy nature
>Try to brew your own sake and beer
Ultimately this leads to
>You can come back from hunting with your qt wife, have an amazingly fresh steak for dinner, and cuddle under the kotatsu with some sake on a cold winter day
But no, they all become salarymen instead. Apparently being underpaid, overworked and living in a cramped apartment is the Japanese version of the American dream.

>The US is the whole world
I'm sorry but actual first world countries don't have gigantic university fees that will leave you in debt for the rest of your life.
Where I'm from, going to university costs 500€ a year, plus the state pays me 400€ monthly because I'm a student.

I never said it was for children.

Funny you imply I think the US is the whole world when I wasnt talking about them. Only you brought them up and assumed I was saying this from an American perspective.

I'm British and I know plenty of people in debt from uni, try again.

Party girls don't want children. Japanese men don't want children with party girl either. Women in Japan are not niggers who get a lot of unwanted pregnancies.

Why is it so hard to understand?

America-lite is the same shit

w2c

Mind that I'm speaking for myself over here, but I think that most people in HS still lack direction in life. Since salaryman is your default route you might as well roll with it until you'll figure something out
Or so they think
Then you get your own house, car, family, shitton of loans and suddenly you find yourself trapped in shit you've never truly wanted
That's my interpretation of phenomenon anyway

Fuck no. I love being in uni. I love the freedom to actually be able to shoot the breeze with upperclassmen on the quad and not have to worry about shit like the bell all the time. And in college I don't have to put up with the bullying shit, because if I don't want to see your face ever again, there's more than enough space on campus to make sure of it. The work is harder, yeah, but there are no stupid busywork assignments anymore. You actually have a modicum of freedom to think instead of parrot. And you get sweet access to all sorts of journals for free.

>Actual first world countries don't have gigantic university fees that will leave you in debt for the rest of your life.

That only happens when you spend a fortune to study crap.

Have you ever read "Death of a Salesman"?
It's a play and it's not very long so it goes down pretty easily. I'm not sure, but I think you might find it interesting.

The only plus of HS is being able to fuck slutty young girls or date a pure gf.

Other than that HS is crap compared to the life i currently live.

Oh right don't forget the mandatory extracurriculars

Fuck that.
Uni is the best.
You show up when you care.
You take exams when you care.
You do everything when you feel like it.
You can stay in your room for weeks and not miss a thing.

please somebody save me

It kinda is honestly, over there you get a meager amount of vacation days per year and you're looked down on if you actually take them. And if you complain about being overworked for shitty pay then you're not considered a real man. And yet they Japanese office workers still manage to be some of the least productive people on this planet.

Nope, but it sounds interesting. But I'm currently reading something so it will have to wait.

But why? Why would anyone choose that life over a rural one with more freedom and less stress?
>You arent considered a real man
Oh no, a submissive beta is a suit will say mean things if you dont sacrifice your entire life for his shitty company, how shall anyone go on?

How can Japs live like this? I knwo they are collectivist, but fucking hell. Arent the atheist/non-religious too? So they know damn well they have one life, and thats how they spend it.

Target audience and tastes aside I can kinda see why most anime is set in high school - there's a comforting structure that makes setting events and the portrayal of relationships easier. You're basically with the same people day in and day out. Networks are more nebulous in university. I made it through seven years of university with hardly enough "friends" to count on one hand. Whereas in high school it was much easier to fall into a group of fellow normies/losers/what have yous.

God, I fucking hated college.

You do realize you're talking abotu a country that gives much more value to how other's perceive you than you're probably accostumed to. Appearances are everything in Japan.

The problem is these question can be better answered outside of Sup Forums. People think things too black and white here I kinda gave up spoonfeeding.

>So they know damn well they have one life, and thats how they spend it.
because in Japan, being an adult aka SHAKAIJIN means to stop being WAGAMAMA and to try not disappoint everyone.
but hey, you can drink however you please.

>How can Japs live like this?
the same reason as those who work in poor working condition job in your country. There are no happy places.

>There are no happy places.
Thats life in general, bt while nowhere is perfect some places are better than others.
Fisherman > Salaryman.

Who the hell hopes for a normal life after getting into anime? You're supposed to long for the surreal and romantic while channeling that energy into reaching mental and physical peak conditioning.

>life basically ends after high school.

Japan's desire for eternal kawaii youth has reared some odd conclusions and phenomena.

>Golden Time
But that could have been set anywhere for the same effect.
>TADA
