>“I didn’t become a software engineer to be trying to make ends meet,” said a Twitter employee in his early 40s who earns a base salary of $160,000. It is, he added, a “pretty bad” income for raising a family in the Bay Area.
>“We make over $1m between us, but we can’t afford a house,” said a woman in her 50s who works in digital marketing for a major telecoms corporation, while her partner works as an engineer at a digital media company. “This is part of where the American dream is not working out here.”
>Another tech worker feeling excluded from the real estate market was 41-year-old Michael, who works at a networking firm in Silicon Valley and last year earned $700,000. Sick of his 22-mile commute to work, which can sometimes take up to two and half hours, he explored buying a property nearer work. Although he said his salary means he can afford to live a decent life, he finds the cost of living, combined with the terrible commute, unpalatable.
>In 2015, according to SmartAsset.com, the cost of living there was "62.6% higher than the U.S. average." In 2016, the same site found that you'd need to make at least $216,129 a year to afford the rent on an average two-bedroom apartment.
>The article recounts the frustrations of tech workers making between $100,000 and $700,000 a year and yet finding themselves rent-burdened, unable to save and commuting for hours each day. In one colorful example, an Apple employee lived until recently in a garage in Santa Cruz, using a bucket as a toilet.

I'd say 1929. That was when America had to revert to becoming a military-industrial complex and basically the cancer of the world just to extend its life support by a little. Hasn't stopped ever since.
I think that if you guys just endured the poverty of the Depression and didn't become the monster you're now, you'd most likely be the most stable country right now as the free market would've found its own solutions. But no, let's plunder Europe and also lets tax everyone by 90% so we can cultivate our state-run military-industrial complex. Sadly, you became addicted to it and are now at a stage where you basically cannot exist without doing it

They're in the bay area, the average price for a house is over a million dollars. Rent is easily $3000 for a 1 bedroom apartment.
They're in one of the most expensive parts of the country and shocked when their 6-7 figure income doesn't make them wealthy.
Joseph Ward
This is what it sounds like to me. They make over ten times what I make and to have a cost of living at 62% higher than average they should still be filthy rich
Jeremiah Barnes
i know costs are high there, but they still seem retarded to me. Trying to live a moderate life in CA is worthless unless you're rich. They need to be in a studio living like misers, not buying ca wine valley beverages and whatnot, not to mention being in the latter half of their lives and not moving to another tech state now that they aren't entrants to the field anymore.
I don't feel any sorrow for commiefornia.

the american dream died in the 90s officially. the dream wasnt a house and 2.5 kids and 2 cars and retiring at 50. thats just what people wanted every one else to think
the american dream was global conquest through genocide. for soem reason they had selected the japanese to be first to be wiped out. lots of people didnt think that was ok and america got into trouble for a series of attempts including old shit decades old.
this caused a series of investigations internationally and that got the west into trouble. there will be no white only world in the future. you will have to behave to prevent eye for a eye justice and most of your weapons have been turned over to international sources. america included. most american nukes were handed over to russia and the bulk of the EUs military hardware for land turned over to the UN

Many of them do but the employees in the article don't actually want that. They want to be in a liberal cesspool... they just want to be there with less expenses. true, but there's no reason to suffer a rent seeking society.

I just left CA, its the only reason I know CA prices are just a foreign concept for most people. Again, bay area houses even for a modest house is EASILY over a million. Thats what, $7k+ per month per mortgage, plus taxes and upkeep. Thats at least $85k per year just in mortgage alone.
His salary may be $160,000, but income and federal taxes takes 33% of that in CA. He's probably paying for health insurance, retirement plan, and $3/gallon gas just to commute. Every little thing costs 20% more in CA because thats how liberals like it. Yeah I'm sure he's got money and spends more than he should because he realizes eating beans and rice isn't a fun thing to do. But again, if you're a programmer or whatever pulling a solid $150k, and only putting $10000 per year into savings, you realize you'll never be able to buy a house, never be able to give your wife and kids a life of luxury, and you're not making huge advancements in your own lifestyle. But, in their defense the critics aren't running the numbers for cost of living in CA. However they are right in that he should move somewhere else more affordable.
Matthew Torres

These anons are right. I'm a poorfag who lives in the SFBay Area™. Most of the people I know don't make anywhere near that kind of money and still get by. It's bad here, but it's not THAT bad.
I know plenty of people doing okay on much less than that. It's not easy, but it can be done. There are still many NEETS here, semi employed hipsters, new age hippies living at their income limit, etc. Where theres a will, theres a way.
TL;DR-- these articles are exaggerating shit, and these fags are clearly being picky and stupid. You can make it work if you really want to.
That being said, it *is* getting harder here, and it's pretty true that low middle class starts around 100K here. Anything below that and you're working class.

Huge waste of money. Pick your batlles, don't go drink all the time, and save up. This is a major way that fags in the City like to literally piss away their hard earned cash so that they can feel social. Sad.
>$800 a month Need to eat out every week, everyday

Don't mix up a population and it's government. Is the US State the same thing as the people of the US?
Yes, transplants from Red States, Mexicans, Immigrants (mostly from Asia, and then everywhere else) do a lot to fuck up the local feel of the state. This has been more true in SF Bay than anywhere. Rich programmers being recruited from everywhere else but do not understand or connect with the local culture of the Bay, pricing everybody out and taking over, but not adding anything to the legacy & culture that has existed here since the Gold Rush. You do need those things. Those are given but in my example, its the train of thought about how people imbalance their lives while complaining about how hard it is to maintain it. At the end of the day, when you have all those costs and can't handle it, its time to find places to cut costs or suck it up and take in more money from somewhere. >when I live here and have all these bills and live this kind of life, I can't improve my situation in any way. Figure it out! They usually do by around 30 something. There are people in their 20s just killing it. Job, cars, house, wife, kids, vacations, you name it. There are others that are just dreaming. They gotta figure it out.
