I know it's first and foremost another gary stu harem mmo wish-fulfillment but it's got some suffering in it. what sets it apart, aside from that

It's actually quite the opposite of that, its more of a anti-thesis of it actually. Think of this series as the monkey's paw of mmo/fantasy tropes. Not to mention the author himself hates those tropes.

What sets it apart from the rest is due to the fact that his strength isn't handed to him on a silver platter, he actually works for it. Not to mention It has a surprisingly largo amount of depth for a series as well as character development. What makes this series unique is also the fact that we may very well have a villain protag, though its not fully confirmed.

Nah, what's most likely is that Emilia and Subaru will have a schism and she says something irrevocable in the spur of the moment like 'I never want to see you again, I never liked you, no one did - I hate you!'. Subaru will be despondent, all alone with Rem, finally giving into sheer despair and giving up on everything he's ever believed in. Everything he had ever done in that world, the hundreds of deaths, the courage and herculean effort he put forth? Rendered irrelevant and pointless. The only girl he ever loved who trusted him 100%, no one can even remember, let alone see and is a vegetable. To make things worse, at that point I'm sure he'll go through with the final step to free Satella so he can finally be free of this nightmare, once and for all, or as a last-ditch effort to somehow save the last girl in the world that trusts and loves him, Rem.

Of course, Satella will confront Emilia at some point to taunt her with the truth, the hundreds of horrendous deaths Subaru went through, many by the hands of his closest friends, Rem being blotted out of existence and her very soul being perverted.

Ends with Emilia getting killed and Subaru killing himself, only for Subaru to return to life mere seconds before she died. He'd be forced to watch Emilia die over and over and over and over again, entirely powerless to stop. Then, he will finally break, lose is his mind, and become Satella's perfect husbando.

That's my headcanon anyway. Oh yeah, the scent of the witch will, at some point (give it a few more volumes) be noticeable by ordinary people, and Subaru will become more and more repelling, and lonely. Even his closest friends could wind up leaving his company at a point that the witches' scent becomes so strong that they can't just chalk it up to a curse, and Subaru's inability to explain it would only serve to inflame the situation. After so many deaths, the only person who would or could accept him is Satella.
