It's normal. I enjoyed a lot some dumb shounen sport anime, but that doesn't mean I think they are a masterpiece or anything like that.

2012 wasnt a bad year by any means. You had Psycho-Pass, K-Project, some new Gintama, some JoJo, Another (didnt really like it personally but know more than a couple people who did), Kuroko no Basket, Natsume, SAO for the Malfags, and all kinds of other stuff i cant remember off the top of my head. Kingdom definitely wasnt the best of the year though

That's why it's good. It plays with shonen tropes by applying them to cooking, and does a great job of it. The anime also adds a lot of flair and a god-tier soundtrack.

Watch something like Ace of Diamond - that's what a real sports anime looks like. And most of them are closer to that than Kuroko, which is some sort of magic superpower battle anime masquerading as basketball.
