French is easy, half the words are the same as English. The grammar has a couple of annoying points but it's not too bad. Just remember that all nouns need determiners and that the meaning of some verb change depending on the preposition.

That's a false equivalency. Old Norse evolved into what is now modern day Norwegian/Danish/Swedish. They're successor languages. It's like asking me to speak the English of Shakespeare's time.
We had a language debate in the 19th century when we got independence from Denmark. One man wanted to reinstate the old norse, but he didnt win through. Instead, a man travelled all around and studied all our dialects, mixing them together into one language.
I can read and understand old norse, we learn it in school, but not many people speak it unless you are on Iceland or the Faroes. Old norse sounds like a mix between norwegian, swedish and danish.

Japanese has a lot of homophones, too but it's not really a problem because most of them are only used in specialised contexts, or in writing. If a word is ambiguous, they'll avoid it, or gesticulate.
