What is the point of so many different countries in that region anyways? The new world is kind of special in the sense that you have all these mega countries with a monoculture (USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, etc.) and then you have Middle America, same language, same culture (I presume), same lack of history (they were neither Aztec, only the northern ones had Mayan civilization at some point I believe but not anymore when the Spanish arrived). What makes them unique enough for separation by border? At least for the Carribean, there is an actual ocean inbetween the islands.

Yes, that was my point user. Most of those micronations were historically tied to their surrounding countries and siphoned off some of that wealth to support themselves (even if through tourism). Many of them were kingdoms unto themselves and were self-sufficient long before the modern age.

Central America has not had that luxury. They are both surrounded by low-tier countries while themselves being low-tier. It's hard to lift themselves out of that hole without neighboring help.

Central America has had shit luck. First it has always been taken as a sort of bridge connecting the South to the North. Central America was never the objective or destination but rather the way towards something. So it is an area that has been used by many powers as they see fit.

It was a bridge for the Soviets to get closer to the US and for the US to get closer to South America to control against the Soviets and also for cheap resources. It is a bridge for drug lords who were encouraged by agencies such as the CIA to fun their wars against the Soviets.
