Trump's claim: Obama illegally surveilled him for political gain

Reality: Paul Manafort was into enough shady stuff to have the FBI ask for a court order to surveil him (a second time) and the FISA court agreed with them. With what we know now (Manafort was an unregistered Foreign Agent, had an undisclosed $12.7M deal to advance Pro-Russian Ukrainian interests, was in the Trump Jr meeting with Veselnitskaya to discuss sanctions and dirt on Clinton) it's pretty easy to see how they were able to convince a court that he needed surveilled.

... So the two key claims that it was

1. Obama (or his administration) that was politically targeting the Trump campaign
2. Illegal

are both bullshit.

A person (at least one) inside Trump Tower was being legally surveilled by the FBI. That's bad news for the Trump campaign and is not even remotely a vindication of his claim. No one ever argued that the FBI wasn't surveilling shady people for legal reasons. Many people in fact pointed out that if Trump or his team were caught up in surveillance at all it either meant that they themselves were being surveilled in conjunction with a court order or were caught up in FISA surveillance (which is surveillance of a foreign spies).

Trump and his boys are going to jail.

Trump needed to make it look like he was under surveillance so he brought in Paul Manafort. He knew that Manafort was under previous surveillance and kept him close enough and far enough to qualify that he was infact surveilled, albeit maybe not much.

Manafort was pardoned because the Special Counsel had broader authority to dig deeper into Manafort than the FBI/DOJ originally had with FISA.

Trump never said he was wiretapped. His claim was Trump Tower was wiretapped. He was right. They also continued the wire tap after their investigation was done. He was also right.

Trump never claimed it was illegal and Obama was objectively targeting the Trump campaign. We also know no evidence was found, and that FISA courts are literal rubber stamps for anything the government wants (99.7% of all requests by the executive are approved).
