I was born in America in 1987 and I was always told I was "French Canadian" but I'm not actually French at all. GEDmatch says I'm likely some kind of Croatian, Romanian, Hungarian, or Czech... From what I understand the Balkans were liberated from the Ottomans in 1913, which is just about the time my great-grandparents were born. Sometime between 1913 and 1940 they immigrated to Canada and then to the USA. At that time the US had a ban on Eastern European immigrants, but my family were able to get in because they said they were French.

Well I'm under the impression the Russian Empire invaded the Romania and Moldova region a number of times over the years. I'm wondering if that left any lasting impression on the architecture but especially what it might have done (if anything) to the genetic admixture of the population. Not really. We had a let's say close relationship with the Tzardom of Russia, mainly because they needed access through our territory in order to get to the Balkans and the Ottoman Empire. Moreover, our religion is Orthodox Christian, meaning that we held close relationships with the other slavic groups - and our language was written in a form of Romanian slavic up until the reforms. The Russians helped us get our Independence during the Balkan Wars and they were our main ally during World War I, up until they had a revolution and turned red.

After going full soviet, they pretty much became our worst enemy and the rest is history (commie-enslavement and us losing WW2 and getting raped). Most people nowadays hate the Russians to the gut, and you can see this in virtually all aspects of life. Our last commie ruler, Ceausescu, employed a different branch of communism (a form very similar in many terms with nationalism-socialism) where the main enemy of the state was portrayed as USSR. Pretty mind-boggling, but funny nonetheless.

There is no way there will be no war. Serbs now feel like the germans after the first world war. They are split into 3 countries, they are forbidden to unite and get their ethnic country like slovenes and croats got.
