It was only months after the gun ban came in where you were no longer allowed to own guns to protect yourself, your family or your home that home invasions became a new phenomena (where they enter your home, tie you up, assault you and steal everything). Before the ban, they never had a name for the crime in Australia because it never happened at all. After the ban, it was running rampant for a while and it is still a thing now.
Also robberies and assault also went up. Gun deaths only continued to decline at the exact same rate they had been declining for 20 years before the ban was put in place, it didn't speed up any process, the process just continued at the same rate while other crimes went up dramatically. It's weird how they try to push the whole "Look at Australia! They banned guns and it worked!" but it's completely false. Australia never had many shootings or masscres to begin with, after the ban there has still been many shooting masscres even though media says "Australia hasn't had a mass shooting since the ban" yet even wikipedia proves this false.

Well you can own guns, but pump actions are very hard to get a license for and semi-auto is essentially impossible for most people to get a license for.
The reason a lot of people had their guns removed was because the rules changed and they no longer had a "reasonable excuse" to own a firearm, when you apply for a license you have to have a reason to apply. You used to be able to put down home protection, but the new laws changed that so now you have to put down sport shooting (which you have to attend a specific shooting competitions per year to retain the license) or hunting (which you need written permissions and contact details of the persons land you will be hunting on whenever you do go, unless you own the land and it has to be over a certain size) and you can only use handguns at a range, no matter how much land you have it's illegal to use your firearm on a property.
When you have a license, police do random spot checks to make sure firearms are "stored correctly" they have to be in the safe at all times except when about to be in use and with the bolt removed and kept separate away from the rest of the firearm as well as the ammunition as to be kept separate too. The weapons you buy and ammunition you buy is also kept track of. If the police come for an inspection and you aren't home but your wife or other family member is and lets the police in, opens the safe to show they are stored correctly the firearms will be confiscated and you will lose your license because it is seen as not safe if someone who is unlicensed has access to the key.
