they are very strict with the policy that member states MUST have a functioning democracy, that is why the Vatican isn't allowed in etc...

And yet the EU itself is not a democracy, it's own citizens can't vote for an EU president or Parliament etc... that is hugely hypocritical, who wants to be a part of that?

What? Standartization would be something like having the same power outlets trough countries or compatible highway tolls, restriction of sugar in juice and flavours in tobacco is a lot of thibgs but not standartization.

it makes it easier for them to tell exactly what it is they are buying and selling. its harder when every country can label things that are totally different the same or things that are the same differently
