Learn English, one romance language (preferably Spanish) and one Slavic language (preferably Russian). Literally everyone can speak one of these languages, or they are subhuman.
The only exception is the Japanese.
Example, with Spanish, you can communicate with an Italian at a basic level. Nordics all speak English. With Russian, you can communicate at a basic level with all Slavs.

Mandarin is only spoken in parts of China, and various dialects have about as much in common as languages with common roots (e.g. Polish and Czech) in that you can probably understand them but they are different languages.
In regards to Russia maybe old people in post-soviet states still know it, you'll find more English speakers in Poland than Russian-speakers for instance. I am not sure how it is in all the -stans.
