Apparently a lot of needless censorship comes from QA people looking to pad their hours.
Censoring the middle finger would be more reasonable, but censoring an onigiri is just job security to them; saying that "kids don't understand Japanese food" is just an excuse.

They've been doing that one for years.
At first, it was light touches. Early seasons of Pokemon would still show the onigiri, but the characters would refer to them as "donuts."
In more recent episodes, they will digitally edit the footage to more familiar foods. So a Japanese onigiri could change into a hotdog or a sandwich.
