Although I may be biased. I saw Voices of a Distant Star when I was younger and its one of the anime that really kindled my love. It really stuck with me, but I couldn't remember the name until I found it on Crunchyroll a few years back. A sweet reunion.

Since then I've seen all his work, and while some is better than others, I'm a big admirer of him.

Hey man, its cool. To each their own.

Honestly the mix of light fantasy and time travel is one of the major selling points for me, I'm a sucker for subtle supernatural/sci-fi elements.

The romance I'm not a huge fan of, but Shinkai does it very well imho, that's why I can stomach it. Very nostalgic and bittersweet.

The art is also nice, particularly the scenery. Setting is done so well in all of his movies.
