Hitler of course wanted to exterminate Slavs but the Schutzstaffel saw opportunity to liberate them from their communist mind set. The SS formed branches off of the Soviet Union, Georgia, and Armenia and including Russia and recruited men of these nationalities into their own SS divisions. Mostly captured POWS but they served well. Many also volunteered!

If they were killed instantly then why do the Russians constantly complain about hundreds of thousands of mistreated prisoners in German POW and concentration camps. Obviously they weren't all killed on the spot. Over ten thousand defected to Germany and many POW's were forced into labor for the Reich's war effort.
