His death was symbolic. He is the only character in GoT who has no faults, no moral failings. He keeps his nephew safe, claiming him to be a bastard. The only stain on his honor, and Ned does it anyways.

Ned Stark represents Old Fantasy, the old ways of telling stories about mythical figures who are good and moral in every sense. Similar to LoTR fantasy. His death recognizes and symbolizes a departure from that mode of storytelling.

I do miss him, but he had to die in the meta-narrative or we would just see the show as LoTR but with politics.
