The style of rock in the 00's happened. Rock bands started wailing about their feelings and got super whiny, even whinier than they were in the 90's. Shit like Slipknot and Linkin Park getting big was novel at the time, but it quickly became cliche or even farcical to write music like they were. Furthermore, the concept of listening to older rock, regardless of popularity, obtained a broad label of "dad rock", which made the older stuff seem dated and uncool to younger generations. Younger generations that actually bought and listened to modern music. So there was a point where rock was seen as either cliche whiny edgy stuff, or something that you didn't want to listen to due to association with your parents, and people started to listen to other forms of modern music to distance themselves from that. The most prominent forms of music that weren't rock at the time were electronic pop, rap, and country, and those dominate contemporary radio stations and sales to this day as a result.
Eventually, at some point in the future, rap too will be seen as cliche boring old music that only your parents listened to. It's inevitable, it's just a question of when it'll happen.
