Normally I answer such questions with "Try it out yourself", but since I wasted way too much time on PoT for the wrong reason, I'll tell you what I think.
It's a powerlevel manga. It's barely about tennis or anything you'd like about a sports manga. You read it like a battle shonen. In fact, by the end of the original manga there's at least 2 characters that actually transform, DBZ style. The sequel introduces the real silliness though.
I read it for the smug shota and I was seriously disappointed. I should have stuck with Case Closed. I guess fujoshi might get something out of it. I didn't really pay attention to that angle.
You can start with these movies if you want to get a quick feel of his style.

Movie : I enjoyed Dezaki's prime mise en scene, but wasn't impressed by the scenario, it didn't add up. I gave it 6/10. and OAV 8/10

Well the last two episodes were made after he died, and I hear online they get a really bad rap compared to his original OVA. I can understand why, the original OVA series is brilliant.

First TV series and the movie are completely subbed and the first OVA series is getting translated bit by bit.
I've had some awareness of it for a long time, but never felt a need to watch it, and will probably have to wait for a bit longer before I get to it, but the picture looks nice.
