How do I go about watching FMA?

How do I go about watching FMA?

I know Brotherhood exists, but I heard it's just an updated version of the original, so do I just watch Brotherhood?

It's not an updated version, it's the actual story. The first anime has plot that goes in nonsensical directions that is generally only liked by the kind of people who think Evangelion has any kind of actual religious significance instead of being one man crying about how shitty life is while masturbating over his childhood Ultraman toy collection.

You have to watch the original to fully appreciate how good Brotherhood is.

Honestly I say the Original, but I am bias since I grew up watching the original first and then to brotherhood.
Brotherhood follows the manga while the Original diverts course since the source material wasn't finished at the time. Your choice of Mature/Edge (original) or Fun/Action (Brotherhood).
Not saying Mature/Edge is bad, but it is way more emotional I feel. Again this is my opinion which in some ways is probbly shit and I accept that.

I watched Brotherhood first and then the 2002 series, my brain went on fire.

The movie was cool tho

The original does the Chimera story better and thats it.

Brotherhood only.

Watch half of 03 and move on to brotherhood.

Don't be that guy Sup Forumsnon. You know as well as I do that both must be watched

What about watching the original up through the Nina/Scar fight, and then stopping from there and picking up brotherhood?

i watched the original and then brotherhood. In my opinion that is the way to do it. Both versions are really good so there isn't a wrong way to do it. Brotherhood takes off in a different direction than the original after a few episodes so it isn't like rewatching a show if you do it in that order.

I watched the original growing up then Brotherhood awhile ago. They're both good but Brotherhood has a more cohesive story and actually has an ending that doesn't involve watching movies

I say after Kimblee vs Scar

Read the manga

>Not wanting to watch Hitler: The Animated Movie

Kimblee was much better in the orignal.
Fight me

You don't need to be told how to watch two anime. Watch one, watch both, or watch neither. This isn't difficult. A simple Google search would tell you the differences between the two series.

Use your fucking brain and think for yourself.

Yup.
Brotherhood is missing some plot points and character development in the first half, because they assume you already saw the original series.

>full metal alchemist
>he's only partially metal
>show is not called Partially Metal Alchemist

Read the manga.

Watch both.
Or to save a little bit of time. Watch the old one first and skip the first few episodes of Brotherhood. Brotherhood was clearly made with the assumption that you've seen the older version, so they rushed the plot and explained things very poorly at first. (Yet somehow they decided to waste time with an anime original first episode that was completely pointless).

The original is fun and has a more tragic end. If you insist on watching brotherhood, watch the first 30 episodes of the original and then watch brotherhood.

The original series went anime original from about halfway through

Brotherhood is a faithful adaptation of the source material

You're missing out on nothing by only watching Brotherhood. FMA (2003) is hot garbage.

That's dumb.
Brotherhood was clearly made for people who have already watched the older series so they skipped over a lot of stuff. This idea of something that didn't follow the source 100% is automatically garbage is just plain idiocy.

(you) are

You can watch Brotherhood alone and still have the full experience. The only thing they legitimately cut is Yoki at the start, and that barely fucking matters.

The 2003 FMA was a fucking mess.

dub or sub?

>Watching the remake before the original
Why would you do this?

>remake
It's not. It is direct manga adaptation.

Anyway, OP, if you are interested in the series, I suggest to watch Brotherhood first as it directly follows story from the original manga (it even finished almost the same day manga's final chapter came out).

If you liked it, you can watch the original TV series out of curiousity - it uses early stories from the manga and then builds its own unique world that differs from the original in almost every way. You know, like in all these alternative comicbook universes were same characters have different origin stories, appearances and even power sets.

I'm more wondering if it's just the same story twice. If it is I'm not gonna inclined to watch it again, which would fuck me over if I watched the worse version first.

Thanks user.

>it's just an updated version of the original

At least try or pretend better... jesus.

Oh, and then there are movies. The first one (2005) is a direct sequel of the 2003 TV series. It's pretty good, even has Hitler in it. Then there's a newer one, something with Star of Millos in the title. That's just a stand-alone story that takes place in the original manga\Brotherhood universe.

Oh, and there are also OVA's. There's a set released after the 2003 series with short stories that aren't even connected with series' world but still quite entertaining.

The ones that came with DVD\Blu-Rays of Brotherhood, though, a pretty neat and consist mostly of extra stories taking place before the Brotherhood or between the episodes.

Dont its shit, the plot is fucking terrible, I read the entire manga in five days time and wow I was dissapointed at the end talk about anticlimatic holy shit.

Brotherhood was made for people that watched the 2003 anime and/or read the manga and rushes the shit of the begining.

You shouldn't use Brotherhood as your start of the series.

Manga and then Brotherhood
or
2003 and then Bortherhood

2003 then manga is the only way. Or just read the manga.

Watch both.

Exactly.

The answer is always: Read the book, read the book, read the motherfucking book.

Brotherhood really rushes the beginning because its the same shit they covered in the original, so I recommend watching the original first or at least half of it. But after that point the people behind the anime had to make up an ending because the author wouldn't tell them what was going to happen, and it ended up being in a vastly different direction than the real show ended up. Brotherhood is a redo proper following the manga.

They both do different things well.

Original Series: Atmosphere, music, and setup
Brotherhood: An actual good, sensical, overarching plot
The manga: better than both the salami and the baloney

Watch ’03 first, enjoy it for what it is, and the ridiculous direction they took the plot when they had the freedom.
Then watch Brotherhood, and appreciate the fact that they don’t waste your time if you’ve watched the original.

Brotherhood is better, and is truer in tone to the manga.
BUT ’03 had the “Brothers” theme, which is still the best music to come out of the series, so that’s something it’s got going for it - youtube.com/watch?v=BXQLrkW33f0

>brotherhood didn't use bratja
LITERALLY WHY, I CAN'T FEEL IF THIS SONG ISN'T PLAYING

Best route: Read the fucking manga
Good route: 2003 -> Brotherhood or Manga
Bad route: Brotherhood -> X

Are you an edgy teen? If you are just watch the 2013 show.

If not just read the manga.

I really loved the music from the first version.

Since brotherhood is better, doesn't it make sense to watch brotherhood first, because by watching the original first, you already know what happens in the story, making watching the superior version less enjoyable

Basically, it makes sense to use your "new and exciting story" experience on the superior version, because you only get to use it once.

Last time it's 2016 here in America

Ant' nobody got time to read some books like some fucking queer

Watch both

>Ant' nobody got time to read some books like some fucking queer
>reading the manga would take considerably less time than watching either show

>full metal alchemist
I thought the name arised when people thought the new promising powerful alchemist was mistaken to be Alphonse, the brother

The japanese name doesn't say a thing about "full".

(OP)

Brain dead faggots, the best manga can't even come close to a good book that is available in the 100's in many many different genres, if you have the time and energy to read a book don't waste your time on Japanese comics.

ain't nobody got time for that, I still have 200 shows in my backlog that need watching

Hi Sup Forums, welcome to Sup Forums

>shitting on manga on an anime & manga board.

you're an idiot, the first bunch of episodes of Brotherhood are rushed, incoherent, and have no other character development whatsoever. The original took its time to develop the characters and didn't need to shove plot down the viewer's throat the entire time Code Geass style

Brotherhood follows the manga's story, while the original anime diverged after a certain point. One common complaint about brotherhood was that it rushed through the content the previous anime had faithfully adapted because it expected people to have already seen those parts.

The first FMA feels "deep" when you're like 16.
FMA:B is way better, except for the first chapters. I mean, Huges and Tucker things

I don't have that version of Brothers.
I need it now.
Torrents for that shit are pretty much dead.
Despair.

I watched 2003 first and then brotherhood without any bias before.

2003 does the initial manga parts better and does one character in particular better, but goes off the deep end when it strays from source material.

Brotherhood has a lot of content to adapt so they rushed the beginning that had been previously adapted.

Both have top notch soundtracks though.

Brotherhood doesn't really rush that much, the beginning of the manga IS fast-paced: the entire subplot about Nina takes place in one chapter, the brothers learn the secret behind the Philosopher Stone in chapter 10, Hughes goes to phoneboothsville in chapter 15. The only parts Brotherhood really streamlined were Dublith's, but it still kept all the plot points and scenes that would become important in the long run.
FMA03 bloated the beginning and started introducing its anime-original stuff and unnecessary deviations pretty damn early. FMA03 was a nice anime, but it was never a faithful adaptation.

You're right, I keep forgetting all the fillershit that 03 added like the fake elric brothers

Izumi introduction was better in 2003. And they even erased Yoki introduction.

Aren't the fake Elric borther from a novel?

Bookth are butter cauze my imagination guise

Written word is over 5000 years old. You really think it's still the best form of communicating a story alone? All this artwork, video, games, and combinations of them are a fucking phase?

It's not an or all nothing contract, I can appreciate anime without the other, many of my favorite animes are novel based anyway.

Yoki's origin story was explained later in a flashback, and even the characters admitted that nobody gave a shit.

Best, according to what parameters? Horses are pretty fucking old, but they are still used by the police.

Books will be always be better to convey an idea, experience or a story, at least until we can directly transmit those to the brain.

Comics (or manga), demand less work from the consumer, so you sacrifice quality for comfort.

There's a reason a book adaptation is almost never better be it as a move or a series, these new methods are harder to use, and we didn't have 5000 year to perfect those methods (yet).

The original compared to brotherhood is like watching something really exciting but leading you up to disappointment, considering the ending of the og. After watching brotherhood i felt so satisfied with it and fell in love with the characters, esp GreedLing.

>watched FMA in 2003 when I was 20 and like it a lot
>read the manga because I wanted to know how that ends when I was in my mid 20's, I loved every minute of it
>watched brotherhood in my early 30's and loved it

I guess some people just never outgrow the edge.

>Geass
Even that series doesn't necessarily do jus plot movement all the time either, though I guess most people forget the show has a lot of down time too, especially early on.
