Start with the Horus Heresy, it's what the entire series is built off. There are also about 46 books in the entire series, but you mostly need to read and know the first three of the series. The others tell different stories from people's perspectives.

When I got into the Lore i just watched a bunch of random topics on YouTube as a intro. Eventually got a feal for it. Eventually got into the modeling a bit and some books once I had a grasp.
For intro sake watch some some short vids from channels like onemindsyndicate, 40k Theories, Arc Warhammer, Vaults of Terra, Tactical Imperialis, etc etc.
Youll be lost in the begining but watch "If the Emporer had a text to speach Device" provides a lot of good background and is a great series to start off with.
For specific questions go to eithet 1d4chan or the warhammer40k wiki.
One thing to keep in mind in 40k (with exceptions) everthing is canon and nothing is. What that means is much of the lore is written from the perspective of a bias party or is presented as rumors or hersay from thousands of years ago. Its honeslty one of my favorite parts about 40k. Leads the door open for alot of possibilities.
It's almost like they didn't even put any effort into the series beyond preachy SJW bullshit. Even with the title, Star Trek: Discovery lives up to its abbreviation of "ST:D".

Star Trek is one of the few TV shows I like but this was drab and boring. Big mistake doing another prequel with colorless military style ships and uniforms. DS9 at least had Quarks to lighten the mood and more time was probably spent there than on the defiant or tactical. The biggest problem with this and Enterprise is it takes itself too seriously. Bad writing, forced lines and lots of other little problems make this a disappointment.

I've never done any modeling. I got into 40k originally just reading the wiki. Though if you want to get deepm into the lore, I'd read the first 3 horus heresy novels. Then I would probably skip 10,000 years to 40k and get the Eisenhorn Omnibus than Ravenor omnibus, honestly some of my favorite sci fi of any i have read and definitely the best 40k fiction.
