If you've already watched 0079 then you don't really need to, the OVAs adapt the two-three volumes of the Origin manga that focus solely on Char's backstory. The rest of the Origin manga is just a retelling of 0079 with some changes here and there.

A character like Char really needs a couple series to develop. The rest only have one series to develop with. You get to really see how his ideals corrupt throughout the UC timeline.

Rau is better than Char in every way.

Everybody who isn't canon fodder knows Char can't be trusted. Rau actually succeeds in deceiving everyone for the majority of the series.

Char has to constantly sacrifice comrades to escape from battle. Rau is a fucking beast and fucks everyone up until the very end.

Char sucks at manipulating people. Rau gets Patrick Zala elected and succeeds in getting both sides of the war to use WMDs against each other.

Char is a crybaby grieving for daddy and wants to destroy earth because "gravity weighs down the soul." Rau wants to end the world because he is literally the result of humanity's worst instincts manifested in the form of a clone.

I knew what the Origin manga was getting into it, but I was confused as to when Char gets the focus when the OVAs started coming out. Might as well wait until they're all out I guess.
