You seem to forget that they're still tens of millions of people in Russia and satellite states who experienced USSR. Virtually nobody, be it in Russia or anti-Russian states that were once part of the USSR, want a return to communism. There's a good reason why citizens cannot leave communist states without government permission.
Even if we dont consider the atrocities, it was still a intrinsically inefficient system which could not satisfy basic needs of the society. Soviet economies always made too much of one thing, and not enough of another. So for example you had lots of can openers but not enough canned food, or lots socks, not enough boots, vice versa. It was a perpetual circus and this is why it collapsed so easily without much bloodshed. At the end of it people were just laughing at the absurdity.
