>2D animation is kind of a hybrid medium of illustration and animation >That's why I consider 3D animation to be a purer form of animation >My perspective is, if we have had computers a hundred years ago, nobody would think of ever doing 2D animation. >3D animation is constantly evolving and constantly getting better, whereas 2D isn't. >The best 2D that's ever been produced has already been done... 50 years ago... I don't think it's gonna get better. >That goes back to my idea that I think the animation should not draw attention to itself. It's not the experience of watching, it's what you're left with after it's over. That's really where my goal is, whatever you can do to achieve that state of mind you want to leave your audience in, the film is just a medium to achieve it. >I want the animation to be invisible, I don't care about the technique, I don't care about the process. >It's all about the characters and the stories and the ideas, never about the animation. >The reason there are so many bad films made is that people are just so focused on the process. This is coming from someone whose hand-animated show is lauded for its style! This blows my mind.
>The way the animation productions system is set up, is that artists are not allowed to make those creative decisions. Everything down to the frame is predetermined on exposure sheets. >A live action director would not dream ever of making a film like that, telling an actor in how many frames he has to perform a certain gesture in. The emotional intent is never conveyed to the animator, the animator doesn't even know why a character has to lower its head, it just says "lower head in 16 frames." >I told my animators what the scene is about and what needs to be conveyed. A lot of them, and this is very funny because they were so used to working in this assembly-line fashion, they'd say: it's hard enough for me to draw this character on-model, on top of that you want me to EXPRESS THIS EMOTION? It's too hard.
isn't that the weirdo who draws people like they've been rung out on the wrack?
Bentley Wright
This isn't really anime.
Isaac Garcia
I don't understand this thread
Where are the waifus?
Ayden Wilson
But user, you are the waifus.
Jaxon Brooks
Literally who?
Carter Gray
>Peter Kunshik Chung (born April 19, 1961 in Seoul, South Korea, as 정건식 (Chung Kunshik, or alternative spelling Jeong Geon-Sik[1]), is a Korean American animator. He is best known for his unique style of animation, as the creator and director of Æon Flux, which ran as shorts on MTV's Liquid Television before launching as its own half-hour television series.
Literally who?

Friendly reminder of what month it is
Matthew Smith
Animation will never be better than when Disney was at its peak 2D or 3D
Benjamin Turner
His animators sounds like little bitches, complaining about expressions.
Jonathan James
>A live action director would not dream ever of making a film like that, telling an actor in how many frames he has to perform a certain gesture in. That's because you can quickly and easily do multiple takes. This guy clearly isn't much of a thinker.
Dominic Baker
Chung is missing the big picture in that his "3D" movies aren't anything more than 2D done on computers. A 3D model and a 2D drawing are still represented on a flat plane, a cel in a sequence and a single frame in a video. It's not true "3D".
A truly 3D environment is full sensory virtual reality, and video games are closer to that than television. Might as well argue that video games like FPS, having the interactive factor, are superior to television.
In any matter, most mainstream CGI characters are sameface and ugly shits. Anime is much more kawaii.
Angel Morgan
I don't really see his point. It's not that 3D animation is constantly improving, it's that digital animation is constantly improving, and that affects 2D animation just as much. 3D vs. 2D is just a stylistic preference.
Hunter Gutierrez
Computers are evil, don't support 3D animation you idiots.
Ryder Ward
2D vs. 3D.
Both are projected onto a plane anyway. 3D just enables 3D-glasses or Lightfield-Displays.
Elijah Rivera
Irrelevant semantics.
The point he's making is that one process still has room to grow.
There are accomplishments in 3D that don't carry over to 2D, such as the recent improvements to hair dynamics since Brave, water simulation, environmental lighting, etc.
Evan Foster
You're right, go back to Sup Forums and hide.
Nathaniel Jones
Doesn't he go on to say right after: >It's all about the characters and the stories and the ideas, never about the animation.
Hair physics don't matter. They're not what makes a film good.
Liam White
This. >I want the animation to be invisible, I don't care about the technique, I don't care about the process.
Aaron Bennett
>The point he's making is that one process still has room to grow. But why does that matter? Improvements to hair dynamics, etc. aren't even necessary for all 3D animation. It depends on the style you're going for. And 2D animation can already do all of this and more, because "3D" is really just a subset of 2D. Technology allows 3D to be created far more efficiently of course, but I just don't understand why he values that more than the constantly changing aesthetics of 2D. He says the best 2D animation was created 50 years ago, but current anime isn't even trying to look like animation from back then. An anime like Sound Euphonium looks completely different than any 70s anime or any western animation. Why are 3D improvements more valuable than that?
Caleb Walker
>I want the animation to be invisible, I don't care about the technique, I don't care about the process. >It's all about the characters and the stories and the ideas, never about the animation. To hear an animator say that is rather... sad.
Adrian Harris
He's probably just the idea/concept guy who never bothered with all the technical detail.
Oliver Smith
So... him?
Josiah Morris
I don't get it then, why on earth is he even an animator then? It sounded as though he'd be better off being a live action tv/movie director or some other roles in live action.
In a way, his words sound way more depressing than whatever Miyazaki said. That grumpy old man may criticise a lot of things, be he never actually directed it at the medium it self. The people in the industry, sure, but not animation itself.

Write a book if all you care about is story
Tyler Sullivan
All those things you mention are about approximating photorealistic/physically accurate effects.
If we want photorealism we can just watch CGI sequences in action movies or some shit.
Nobody wants realism.
Owen Taylor
This is... dumb. Seriously dumb.
Eli Reyes
>The best 2D that's ever been produced has already been done... 50 years ago... I don't think it's gonna get better. How do I tell him how wrong he is? youtube.com/watch?v=47h6pQ6StCk
Cooper Bennett
>It's not the experience of watching Haha what the fuck? Then what is even the point of the medium? Is this guy ok?
Nathaniel Barnes
The rotoscoping is too obvious, and that style has been done better in the past.
3D looks like shit. Even Pixar is much less expressive than the traditionally animated Disney movies.
If you don't care how good the animation looks, write a book.
Anthony Green
>Novels is kind of a hybrid medium of illustrations and writing >That's why I consider comic books to be a purer form of writing >My perspective is, if we have had printers presses a thousand years ago, nobody would think of ever doing novels.

Will this be the new "anime was a mistake"? Also, >giving two fucks about Chung's stupid opinion
Austin James
>The best 2D that's ever been produced has already been done... 50 years ago... I don't think it's gonna get better.
This guy is a fucking idiot, and Aeon Flux looks like shit. Basically "I'm not as talented as my fore fathers, I GIVE UP!"
>The best economy that's ever been ran has already been done... 50 years ago... I don't think it's gonna get better.
Eli Evans
>not knowing Peter Chung either underage, cancer, or both.

Where do you think you are?
Hunter Powell
I'd say the same thing if someone on Sup Forums didn't know who, i dunno, Miyazaki was. Not saying Chung and Miyazaki are on the same level though.
Jace Young
Aeon Flux is not anime and it's shit anyway. Who cares about this gook anyway?
Ethan Davis
>There are accomplishments in 3D that don't carry over to 2D, such as the recent improvements to hair dynamics since Brave, water simulation, environmental lighting, etc. I opened that picture you post and gagged. It's hideous. Absolutely hideous. Never post that shit on Sup Forums again.
Julian Thomas
>i Stop typing like a retard and stay on your board.
Xavier Flores
Why would anybody care about some talentless gook? From his Wiki-entry it looks like he made one ugly show and designed some random characters for some other shitty shows. Some impressive achievements.
Take your Peter Chong and go back to where you came from.
Cameron Flores
Is Peter Chong related with Anna Chong, the porn actress that tried to have sex with over 300 dudes or so?

what if they also don't care for prose. Then it comes down to where he is known, in animation
