I always like to make the argument that if you recognize (if they're white) that they benefit from white privilege that you are also recognizing that the country you live in has some sort of benign privilege system that will be inherited by you and your offspring? When they obviously say yes, then it's fair to argue to them that this system is clearly better than other systems that exist in the world (for you)? They usually say yes. So then you ask why they want to just toss the whole system out instead of fixing the exact problems inherent to the system?

You could buy houses for cheap and get decent jobs right out of high school. Not really. There's nothing wrong with building good communities. Of course we should strive to have families and own homes, etc. but unfortunately we haven't been afforded the same opportunities to do so as previous generations have. I would kill for things to go back to when my father was born. He grew up in the 60's and was an adult in the 70's. He joined the Air Force and owned his own home, lots of property, had a few motorcycles, a badass Stingray Corvette and a boat by the time he was ready to settle and start a family in the 80's.
Even being in the military nowadays doesn't really afford the same level of living. I'm in my late twenties and went back to University this year to put myself in debt that would have been 1/200th of the amount as in my father's day. I worked as a Sous Chef in the fine dining industry and the 75 hour work weeks wasn't worth the 35k with no benefits I was making. The modern era is the pits, man.

I really recommend rural living for those struggling to keep their heads above water in the cities. I left Toronto decades ago. There's a period of adjustment but it's definitely worth it; just owning a piece of land and being around nature all day calms you down and reconciles you to whatever it is you think you might be missing from the urban experience. I paid $60K for a house and six acres of land -- woods, river, field -- back around 2000. My costs are next to nothing, there's no consumerism to tempt me to spend money I don't have, I've learned to chop wood, gather berries, tap maple trees etc., the friendships I've made are long-lasting and the people are friendly, it's a great life.

No. That's not an argument. And that's totally retarded. In fact, you refuted yourself. If it's hereditary, of course it wouldn't be as prevalent everywhere. In fact the point you're refuting is accurate. I believe it to be largely hereditary. It doesn't mean you'll end up depressed even if a lot of your family members are, it just means there's a large genetic aspect that predisposes one to it. That, combined with external factors in upbringing, etc (environment), make depression a very real thing.
It isn't an excuse though. But it is something you should recognize. I do agree, though. There are a lot of things people could be doing better about to ease symptoms or even reverse depression. You have to understand the neurochemical aspects though. We know you can "rewire" your brain. Creating new connections between neurons and helping change the chemistry in your brain with the added neural pathways/synapses.
Depression is largely a habit, I agree with that much.

You're again making my point for me. It's largely habitual in nature. But you have to understand that habits shape the ways our brain operate. Addiction is a prime example. You change the neural pathways and the way your brain produces certain neurotransmitters such as dopamine and seratonin. In the short-term these levels can be normalized (as you suggested) with pharmaceuticals, however these only treat symptoms. So, to your pic related, the change in behavior is what will effect overall mood after your brain has had a chance to create new neural networks and synapses where the appropriate amount of neurotransmitters can be produced.

It IS a medical condition because the VERY physiology associated with depression predisposes one toward it. People with depression take what are known as SSRIs (Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). What this means is that anti-depressants block neurotransmitters from being absorbed (reuptake) after being deposited in the neural synapse. This causes more Serotonin to be left in the synapse longer. Meaning an increase in overall mood.
