Quebec has a long history of being a minority that most people don't like very much, Gives them a complex, makes them nationalistic. Quebec is probably the worst place to have this big border crossing because once the demographics begin to noticeably shift there will be people standing up to defend their heritage, there's not room for two oppressed minorities in the province.

This situation is a pretty new scenario. Most waves of immigration were as a result of wars, famine, disasters and the like. But these aren't orphans from war-torn Syria, or starving Irish, or even economic refugees we turn down almost all of anyways. Chances are they're illegal immigrants fleeing Trump and looking for gimmedats in Canada. There's a lot less goodwill to go around this time.

Quebec had no equivalent to the French Revolution. A lot of things culturally have stayed the same for hundreds of years. You can walk down the historical parts of Quebec City and still see cannonballs embedded in trees from the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. That's why language Quebecois is different than French. After the revolution there was a lot of change for the sake of it that never happened in Quebec.
On one hand it makes most of the people I've met from Quebec smug assholes who have an attitude towards other provinces that's similar to British people looking down on the colonies. On the other hand they're smug assholes who like their history and culture. In Canada the Quebecois terrorism list is the second longest, being beaten by the Islamic terrorism list.
